I’m sorry, Canada

The personal apology of a powerless person in the United States doesn’t matter much, but I sincerely am sorry for what our country is doing to you. Actually, we should be apologizing to the whole world, but Canada is our neighbor and our “silly old deranged grandpa president” is lashing out at them again.

Donald Trump is imposing 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods in response to the country retaliating against previous US tariffs, the White House announced Monday, declaring Canada has unfairly discriminated against American cars, alcohol and dairy products.

Sorry.

Sometimes senile old people get institutionalized, and they are cranky and resentful, and they kick and pinch and slap at the people who are hired to help them, and the relatives (unless they are terribly entitled) feel horrible about it. At least, though, their deranged elder loved one is being confined for their own safety, and is typically too old and feeble to do serious harm. Unfortunately, our foul-tempered nasty old geezer is running free, and has the vast power of the USA at his fingertips, and all the hired help seem to be more interested in enabling him than in being responsible guardians.

Jamelle Bouie knows what he’s talking about.

The responsible thing to do here would be to take all his dangerous toys away from him and put him in a luxurious retirement home with lots of gold geegaws glued to the walls and let him rot away. Unfortunately, too many other people are profiting off their proximity to the demented old fart.

Living in scarizona (or anywhere in this country) I wonder how many people in how many countries are laughing at the u.s. and how many are angry and wish the u.s. would just blow itself up. I see u.s. citizens being shot in Greece and other countries and wonder how many of those are because they were from the u.s. I hate to think I am being ‘tarred with the same brush’ as the magats, plutocrats and xtian terrorists.
Canada is not perfect. But, they are generally more civilized than the cockroaches running the u.s.

So the idiot is going to punish Canada by making Americans pay more for Canadian goods. Ooo…that makes a lot of sense. You have to wonder if someone is skimming off these tariffs into their own pockets.

Still going to buy my (Canadian) Crown Roal Whiskey. Like to have a sip or two every once in a while. Just considering if I should purchase a backup bottle now before the tariffs go into effect.

    OH YEAH, FUCK TRUMP!

    Is this even legal?
I doubt it. It seems to violate a lot of laws including the NAAFTA trade agreement, that Trump pretended to renegotiate.
Trump has already lost once in court big time on his arbitrary tariffs.

    CNN

Ever since the Supreme Court blocked Trump’s broad tariff authority, many governments and businesses believed the risk of being hit with new tariffs had eased. But now, Trump is signaling that he may have found a way to revive them.

Trump is relying on a 1930 trade law that gives a president the power to impose tariffs of up to 50% when another country discriminates against American goods. But since the law has never been used to impose tariffs, the move could face a legal challenge.

I keep waiting for a general strike or other mass action.

People need to be employed first to strike. That’s becoming less and less a reality in Trump’s America.

@Walter: Fair point. Though some of a general strike is refusing to spend money, too (not that we have much). Either way, we need more everyday people to gum up the works and make the elites afraid of the masses.

Apologizing to Canada, or any other country for Trump disasters is futile. Too many Republicans are getting rich selling access to Trump for pardons and kickbacks. Why disrupt your own cash machine? To the rest of the world, this IS who we are.

Thank you for your sentiments, apologies are important to us. However, what Mr. Bouie predicts has already happened. Canadians no longer trust Americans and, as this is seen as the result of a betrayal of a trust, it’s not going to change anytime soon. Canadians are polite, friendly, and, as Tod Maffin (look him up) put it, able “to hold a grudge longer than a twinkie can survive the apocalypse”.

And to add insult to injury, Canada came down to help us fight our fires in California last year. No good deed goes unpunished.
