I missed the last day of Skepticon — I had to fly home early in the morning, since I have this day job (and good thing I left early, too, because flights were a mess) — but fortunately, the videos of the talks are trickling out already. Here’s Amy Davis Roth telling it like it is:
I’m so ashamed. But it’s local, I got talked into it, and it turns out the subject is actually something I’ve been researching lately, so I figured sure, why not. I still think it’s a bad idea, but I’ve been paying too much attention to that debater guy, Matt Dillahunty, and figured I’d take one more stab at it.
It will be held in Fargo, on 12 February, at the Ramada Inn, with Fuz Rana, an old earth creationist from Reasons to Believe. The topic is “Is There Evidence of a Creator or Not?” (guess which side I’m taking). It’s also being organized by the Seventh Day Adventists, so I expect a house stuffed with preconceptions — do feel free to come and balance the scales to some small degree.
Also, I’ll be in Los Angeles on 15 March, to talk with the CFI-LA crowds, which I think will be a little less crazy than what I encounter in Fargo. You can come to that one, too! I’m still thinking about what to talk about there, so suggestions are welcome.
The twitter ban on Keith Law has been lifted, and ESPN’s reputation sinks lower into the gutter. He was told to stay off Twitter after arguing with Curt Schilling about evolution (really, Schilling is an obnoxious idiot on the subject), and now ESPN says this:
Keith’s Twitter suspension had absolutely nothing to do with his opinions on the subject.
All I can say is,
Liberia is suffering a serious Ebola outbreak — people are dying, treatments require intensive efforts from medical personnel, and there aren’t enough doctors. So you’d think they’d welcome a team of four doctors flying in to help. But then it was discovered how they planned to treat critically ill patients dying of a viral disease.

Glenn Greenwald has a great long piece tearing Sam Harris’s ideas apart. It was so satisfying to see my own opinions reflected with such clarity and reason — I have to agree with it all. Read it. It is a thing of beauty.

I’m home at last. It’s a relief; my first random thought about this year’s Skepticon was that the travel was terrible: random delays, screwed up flights, lost luggage, blech. Need to work out teleportation technology for the future. But otherwise…
