The shiny new Skepticon has re-emerged. It’s going to be held on 9-11 August 2019, which is great for me, since it doesn’t fall in the heart of the Fall Semester anymore, and it’s moving from Springfield, Missouri to the big city of St Louis. You can reserve a room already. So mark your calendars and start saving pennies for the trip this summer.
Now we just have to watch for the inevitable tease as they release the speakers’ names one by one. They always have new and interesting voices on their schedule, so you can trust that it’s going to be good.

Skepticon is back: yay!
It’s being held in my city: yay!
The venue is City Center Hotel: ehhhh.
Granted, I have only been there once, and it was when I worked in the parking garage as a security officer, and it was at night, AND it was years ago, but I don’t have the greatest impression of the place.
And the area immediately surrounding it, while fine during the day, can be a bit sketchy at night.
But still! I’m excited for Skepticon, even though it’s 9 months away!

Yes! The Skeptipiller has now become a shiny, beautiful Buttersaurus!

Oh no. St Louis is a garbage city full of garbage people, and Cardinals fans. Who aren’t even close to people as far as I’m concerned. Pious self-important gits should all be beaten with that idiotic arch.

@1 thelastholdout What’s the matter snowflake? St Louis too “urban” for you, you race-baiting git?

This seems like the least off-topic thread in which to post this, so:
I was fascinated by this article in The Atlantic about a writer’s attempt to figure out whether the work that his physicist grandfather obsessed over late in his career was worthwhile science or crackpottery. It’s an interesting exploration of the boundary between “maverick scientist boldly pursues revolutionary idea that everybody else scoffs at” and “scientist stubbornly wastes skills and energy on crackpot theory.”

@Raucous Indignation
Not at all. Like I said, I used to work in that immediate vicinity, and there were enough fights, drug deals, and shootings for my taste.
I still work downtown, and I feel safe enough, but I’d rather not walk past used condoms in the elevator lobby in a place where I’m spending my free time.
