It’s the 2nd day of the 2nd week of the semester and I’m already broken. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are my in-person class and lab days, and it’s going to take a little getting used to again.
Also, it doesn’t help when I come home for lunch and Mary greets me with a bottle of disinfectant. Unclean, unclean, unclean!
Question: has the university set up some transparent plastic panes between you and the students to reduce the risk of symptom-free vaccine breakthrough students infecting you? It is not a panacea, but may help a bit.

Considering the sorts of things he’s been up to recently, being forced to strike people all day with a rancid halibut might be an appropriate punishment for John Cleese as well. At least, I imagine the joy of it would pale after a while.

If you want to add a little extra safety to your labs, it might be worth it to make some makeshift air filters with a box fan and some MERV13 HEPA filters. There’s an article in AIP’s Physics of Fluids (https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0050058) that seems to show they can be effective—if oriented and placed correctly. I’ll be making at least one for my lab.

Yesterday I was a little freaked out by the student in my Calculus III class who snuffled his way through the 90-minute period and made multiple raids on the box of tissues in the room. I checked in with him later, whereupon he reported that he was dealing with post-vaccination side-effects and was feeling much better. And suddenly I’m feeling better, too.
At the beginning of the pandemic I read that soap molecules attract water from one end and oil from the other. So washing with soap and water rips the virus apart. It also results in clean hands. When given the option that’s my choice. Hopefully the internet didn’t feed me false info. It would be a first.
