This weekend, my fellow FtBers have elected to have a podcast in which they discuss their weird, nerdy, geeky hobbies. I suspect they may have chosen this topic to exclude me, since it’s common knowledge that I’m a boring person who never does anything unusual or interesting.
However, maybe I’d have something to say if you, the commenters, told me what you do for fun that others might consider strange or different. Share! Give me some vicarious creativity!
I’ve been retired for a couple of months now, but I still participate in the ISO standards committee for the C++ programming language: paying my dues to INCITS PL22, the U.S. organization of which I’m actually a member, gives me license to hang around with lots of folks who are smarter than I am.
Unfortunately, everything has been Zoom since COVID. The next face-to-face meeting will be in Kailua-Kona, HI in November; but I’ll attend that one via Zoom again: I’m still a little concerned about COVID, not to mention all the problems that the travel industry is having these days.
The first meeting that I’ll attend in person will be in Bridgewater, NJ in February. My plan is to take Amtrak almost all the way, but the first leg of the return trip will be on New Jersey Transit. (I also get lots of enjoyment from riding on trains.)
I seldom watch videos, and with all due love and respect, you all aren’t that visually stimulating, but I’d love to listen as an audio podcast (I spend a lot of time driving). Anything like that available? Maybe, assuming it’s a learnable skill, I’d even be willing to volunteer to help make that happen. No promises. Life is unpredictable.
YouTube is just easy and accessible. All of these are primarily audio recordings — there are ways to strip the audio out and just listen, and you won’t lose anything significant.
Hmmm, I’m pretty boring, too. Does geocaching count as a geeky hobby?
I would think spider hunting in various locales would qualify as interesting and unusual enough.
Spider hunting is mundane, everyone does that.
Geocaching sounds fun and very geeky.
In summer I spend time in my garage (shop for you yanks) turning on a woodlathe and generally messing around with bits of old tree.
Winter is spent bone carving (poorly). I’m a retired dentist so have the tools.
