Nope, I’ll never be able to watch Hercules again

Fresh off his stupid remarks about atheists, Kevin Sorbo has now made stupid remarks about the black people — excuse me, animals — of Ferguson.

“Ferguson riots have very little to do with the shooting of the young man,” he wrote. “It is an excuse to be the losers these animals truly are.”

“It is a tipping point to frustration built up over years of not trying, but blaming everyone else, The Man, for their failures. It’s always someone else’s fault when you give up.”

Sorbo argued that Brown’s death should be a “reminder to the African Americans ( I always thought we just Americans. Oh, well.) that their President the voted in has only made things worse for them, not better.”

The former “Hercules” said that the way to end unrest in the city was to “ban” all media who are “nothing more than agitators.”

“The media promotes chaos to boost their pathetic ratings. We should shut them all off and watch clips on the internet only when republished under fair use by a conservative media watchdog group.”

He made those remarks on facebook, and has since deleted them. How can he become a true wingnut celebrity icon if he shows such weakness?

    Oh that Sorbo.

I’m getting the vibe that he’s doing this in-character. Like the thing like O’Reilly and Colbert do with their public image.

First link recurses to this page, PZ, and I need to know exactly how stupid the things Sorbo said about atheists were, dammit!

I even enjoyed Andromeda before Sorbo got control of the show and turned his own character into Space Jesus.

  4. Alverant says

Maybe he’s just mad that with the new Herc movie, he’s no longer the worse version. The movies MST3K lampooned are still the best. Disney is midway.

Sorbo has apparently realized that, as he is a no-talent hack, the only way to stay in the spotlight is to keep agreeing to say stupid stuff on FauxNoise.

  6. Jackie says

I never watched Hercules. The only thing I’ve seen Sorbo in was an episode of The Guild. He wasn’t exactly the highlight of the show either. That’ll be the last thing I ever see him in. Not big loss. No loss at all, really.

ah! I always wondered what happened there. Like you, at first I thought it was OK, and then after a couple of seasons it became… WTF?? and I simply had to stop watching or risk losing brain cells.

  9. Ichthyic says

So we can call him Jerkules Am I right…

how’s the rest of that go again?

Hey, if it worked for Ted Nugent…

  11. says

It makes you wonder how much effort Sorbo has put into making himself unhireable in mainstream Hollywood. You’d think at the very least he would have been up for a part in the Expendables movies, and there’s probably someone who’d hire him for a recurring character on a sitcom.

Meanwhile, Henry Rollins sticks his foot in his mouth as far as it will go regarding suicide. http://pitchfork.com/news/56421-henry-rollins-criticizes-robin-williams-in-fuck-suicide-essay/

…and a whole lot of others, sadly.

it IS a proven tactic. No reason to suspect that Sorbo isn’t doing the exact same thing really.

watch for him to say something at least as stupid as soon as this bit of stupidity stops gaining attention.

  13. Alverant says

In other TV news Discovery removed the Build Team from Mythbusters. No reason was given why. I’d like to know what happened, but I doubt we’ll ever know. After I heard the news I went to Wikipedia to see if they had anything and I checked out their entries. Funny thing is that Kari is the only one that mentions a religious preference, in her case it’s Atheist. The other two have nothing about their religious beliefs or lack thereof. That’s another thing I’d like an answer for.

  14. Richard Smith says

    @Ichthyic (#14):

Jerkules, zero of song and story.
    Jerkules, loser of ancient glory.
    Fighting for the Right,
    Fighting for the White,
With the strength of ten, plastic army men.

Oh, cheesy old cartoons, what would my misspent youth have been like without you? Every monster sounded like a guy trying to clear a hair out of his throat. At least that Hercules could have been talking about Kevin at the end of every episode… “All is clear!” Yep, it’s pretty clear what sort of person Kevin is, now.

  15. microraptor says

Hey, if it worked for Ted Nugent…

Isn’t he a zombie? I mean, he’s obviously not in prison, after all.

  16. Monsanto says

Sorbo was undoubtedly using the reliable news only found on Christian radio networks like AFR and on Faux News (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/08/20/missouri-cop-was-badly-beaten-before-shooting-michael-brown-says-source/). Sorbo knows what the rest of us uninformed dodos have missed.

Darren Wilson was beaten senseless in his own police cruiser by Brown and while he was unconscious, he struggled with Brown for his gun, which apparently accidentally went off, hitting Brown while it was still in his holster. Wilson recovered quickly from his severe beating just in time to draw his gun and fend off a second attack by Brown. Thank God our brave police officers have guns. (Isn’t it strange that the police chief neglected to tell about this? He’s obviously trying to railroad Wilson into a murder charge.) Sorbo was merely drawing our attention to the unmistakable conclusion that being black makes one an animal — a lot like his immediate understanding of the essence of atheism.

I feel so stupid not immediately turning to Christian radio to find out the Truth behind the story.

  17. says

    Monsanto:

If you’d tuned into one of those stations, your brain cells would never forgive you.

  18. says

The underlying crazy here comes from an adamant refusal to deal with the enormous tons of evidence that all that what we acquire in life and the lives we get to have do not usually come from our hard work alone. The myth of the un-assisted white guy persists in the face of tons of evidence to the contrary. There exists either no realization of the immense advantage gained from winning the birth lottery or we have blatant dishonesty in denying that what family you were born into makes a huge difference. Dishonest or delusional. Maybe a bit of both?

  20. says

I enjoyed Hercules for the unapologetic cheesiness. This will make watching it less fun. At least I still have Xena since Lucy Lawless has always been awesome.

It’s fascinating (in an awful way) the level of sheer willful ignorance on the part of the right wing over Ferguson. I don’t mean the fact they think people shouldn’t protest for their rights and blind belief that the cops are right, that’s par for the course. However they are intent on making Ferguson sound like a lawless hellhole when it’s not. It’s a working class suburb with a pretty average crime rate for its size and population density, in fact the shooting of Michael Brown was the first homicide in Ferguson this year.

  21. Rich Woods says

His attitude about black people I find particularly ironic considering I thought he had lifted his attitude about atheists directly from the likes of Katt Williams and Steve Harvey.

Update: Kevin Sorbo told TMZ Live that he was “stupid”

they should have just left it at that. After all, they’re just a left-wing agitating media rag, right?

  24. says

Personally I can’t stand Sorbo, even as Hercules I disliked him. And no given his statements about the people of Ferguson, I suggest we make a new movie staring Kevin. The self deluded life of a typecast. Hmmm…. Well I will give it more thought. But for a first draft maybe.

Kevin, I think you need to take the advice of great man named Kevin Sorbo:

“It is a tipping point to frustration built up over years of not trying, but blaming everyone else, The Man, for their failures. It’s always someone else’s fault when you give up.”

Take it from Kevin, Kevin; you really shouldn’t blame everyone else for things not working out for you. Really, you only have yourself to blame because you obviously didn’t try hard enough.

  28. raven says

    LOL.

I’m glad Kevin Sorbo said all that. We now know what his brain is made of!!! It appears to be hash browns but it could also be oatmeal.

Sorbo is just a typical stupid fundie xian hater. He has said he hates atheists, nonwhites, and the news media (meaning every news organization except Fox NoNews.)

Which brings up the question, what else does he hate? He appears dimwitted so I suppose he just buys his cult’s party line. Science, scientists, nonxians, children, women, Democrats, Yankees, college students, universities, RINOs. And gays, Can’t forget their current number one hate.

  29. twas brillig (stevem) says

    This is a wake-up call for me. That even though I somewhat liked H:TLJ, Sorbo was just an actor, portraying the character of Herc. I have to remember to distinguish the actor from the character. Liking the character means I liked the writer, not necessarily the actor; I just appreciate the skill of the actor to portray the character so well. Never a *fan* of Herc, anyways; appreciated the introduction of Xena/Lawless. Andromeda was pretty much H:TLJ_in_Space, but Sorbo had little to do with the writing when it was interesting. {wasn’t it a Roddenberry rip-off anyways?}
But Sorbo, what are you doing, commenting on this debacle? Do you live there, have relatives there? Just trying to keep your name in the media you simultaneously denigrate and want shut-down? When you did Herc, ever meet that god; Janus ? The god with two faces? You seem to be portraying him now.

  30. raven says

I’m sure Sorbo is a nonthinking hater who gets all his thoughts from rightwing christofascist sources.

But he should have been bright enough to shut up about them. His whole income depends on the public paying to watch him and not everyone in the USA is a christofascist moron.

  31. says

Andromeda was created out of several concepts Gene Roddenberry had been working on for years. For example he used the name of Sorbo’s character, Dylan Hunt, in his ’70s pilots Planet Earth and Genesis II.

You say, “conservative media watchdog group”, Fox News claims to be a media watchdog and thems are certainly conservatoids, is Fox you advocating? NO THANKS, think again. (Fox is firing up those “animals” in Fergusen, more than the other news media mongers.)

  33. Doug Little says

Sorbo is giving Chuck Norris a run for his money. This must be the business model of washed up b-grade action actors now.

  34. Akira MacKenzie says

I only used to watch Hercules: The Legendary Journeys because it was the only thing to watch on boring Sunday night before a far superior show, Babylon 5, started. I thought Andromeda was a cool concept, but Sorbo’s horrific acting ruined it for me. That, and the WEIRD last season in the pocket universe just didn’t make any sense.

  35. says

    Doug Little:

Do we have any more b-grade actions actors from tv shows? We could totes have a small screen version of the Expendables. Hercules, Walker Texas Ranger…who else do we have?

What was that show that was so-not-bringing-the-X-men-to-television,-nuh-uh.

Mutant X or something like that? You gots to have at least 1 actor from that group that’s all, “I earned my money the old fashioned way. I put on make up and fancy regalia for a few hours a day and had everyone around me treat me as if I were the most important person in the world.”

  37. caesar says

Sorbo argued that Brown’s death should be a “reminder to the African Americans ( I always thought we just Americans. Oh, well.) that their President the voted in has only made things worse for them, not better.”

I’ve always found this to be a weird criticism of Obama. Blacks have always fared the worst during a recession, so the fact that all the economic indicators are bad for them now is not surprising, and is even expected.

This is true! I grew up just across the Chain of Rocks bridge in Illinois. I remember going across the bridge (the old one that has been replaced) to go shopping. You may be too young to remember the little amusement park that used to be on the cliff overlooking the river, but I had some great times there as a child.
When I attended college in St. Louis in the mid ’70s, race relations seemed to be improving a great deal. My first teaching job was in Florissant. We lived there for a while, and the population was diverse and it was a good place to live and work.
I haven’t been back in a long time, and it makes me sad to see those neighborhoods that I remember so well being portrayed as such a horrible place.

Hah. I knew it. He was in An American Carol, a film that seemed to exist entirely to gather up as many wingnut actors as they could and give them a paycheck:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_Carol

Notable other roles in recent-ish years:

Alongside Night, a movie adaptation of a book that was about libertarian political philosophy called Agorism.
Wog Boy 2: Kings of Mykonos, where he plays the “King”
Soul Surfer, a slightly better piece of Christianist propaganda than God is Not Dead.
    Exploitation film “B***h Slap”
“What If…”, a piece of Christian propaganda about an angel showing a cold hearted business man his life he had become a pastor instead.
    Never Cry Werewolf.
Paradox, where he also stars, and while it is probably not very good, at least it isn’t as terrible as the rest: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343740/
Prairie Fever, a Western movie involving mail-order brides. Yay.
And finally: Meet the Spartans. He had a major starring role in fucking Meet the Fucking Spartans. Holy fucking shit.

  40. raven says

Kevin Sorbo is insulting a large part of his audience. Atheists and No Religions, nonwhites, progressives, moderate xians, nonxians. I’m sure he bought the whole Oogedy Boogedy xian hate package as well.

These are the people that have bought him dinner for decades and presumably made him at least moderately well off. Real smart Kevin. Do it some more and let’s find out which other groups you hate.

  41. cicely says

From Wikipedia’s article on Kevin Sorbo:
“Sorbo is a Christian and considers himself politically independent.[17] He has expressed interest in the libertarian philosophy of agorism.[18]

Sorbo believes Hollywood has limited his career because of his conservative political and Christian views.[19]”

I wonder…could he be positioning himself for a political career, now that his acting career is pretty shot?

    Rotten Tomatoes:

God’s Not Dead: 17% (82% of audiences (read: churches) liked it though.
    An American Carol: 11%
    Soul Surfer: 46%
Wog Boy 2: (Under King of Mykonos) 30%
    What If: 40%
    B***h Slap: 31%
Never Cry Werewolf: No critic score, 42% of audiences liked it.
Paradox: 18% of audiences, no critic rating
Prairie Fever: No critic score, 39% of audiences liked it.
Fucking Meet the Fucking Spartans: 2%

At this point, it would require Kevin Sorbo to substantially up his game just to reach the prestigious title of “mediocre”.

  44. mykroft says

    cicely@53
Precisely what I was wondering. There are none so gullible as the far right voters. They’ve demonstrated time and again their willingness to vote certifiable fools into office, because they can recite the correct dog-whistle phrases. The current right wing incombetants are all actors in their way, playing to their audience without doing any real work. He’ll fit right in.

  45. freemage says

You know, I’m used to faithheads being stupid about atheism, so I really didn’t have much concern about his ‘why are they so angry’ comments. I generally don’t give a shit about things celebrities say, unless it’s so foul and odious as to cause actual harm.

Congrats, Kevin, I care about what you say, now. I care enough to want you to fuck right the fuck off, and never stop fucking off. Your parents, tasked with the duty to bring a decent human being into this world, failed miserably. Anytime you come out in public–especially at fan conventions–I want someone to read these quotes out loud and then tell you to fuck off.

Oh, and a quick note on ethics:

Kevin obviously rejects the notion that there is a continuing undercurrent (and sometimes overcurrent) of racism in American society that actively hinders efforts at creating a just society. Funny thing, though–it’s been less than two years since this ran on Comedy Central:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xyhVO-SWfM

Now clearly, the entire point of that sketch is that, like consumerism in Dawn of the Dead, racism is so deeply engrained into so many people of privilege that it remains an instinctive urge even when the rest of conscious thought is destroyed.

Yet I’m sure Mr. Sorbo took a check, and appreciated the notice his brief bit there yielded. Fucking hypochrist.

I don’t know how you guys feel about this, but when someone says something so strong, offensive and clearly deliberate and then retracts them with a short apology (usually like “I shouldn’t have said that”), that makes me dislike them even more. It just has a stench of cowardliness, disingenuity and sleaziness that makes me think you should have just had the courage of your convictions and stuck to your opinion. Own up to having awful opinions and take your licking.

I feel much the same way. I don’t for a second think such an apology is genuine.
    For instance:
    Trigger Warning
Gene Simmons continues asshole tour by telling depressed people to kill themselves. He apologized after he received a huge backlash, but that accomplishes nothing, other than to placate people. If he’s genuinely sorry for what he said, he needs to explain why his words were wrong and act in some way to make up for those actions going forward in the future.
It’s one thing to accidentally bump into someone or step on their toe. When you do that, and say sorry, yes, I do believe that’s genuine.
When you spout ignorant, hateful, bigoted bullshit and not apologize until you’re called out for it, that does not convince me that you’re actually sorry. You’re playing to the camera. You don’t actually care about the people you’ve pissed off or hurt with your words.

There are more than enough Baldwin brothers to fill up the show roster without having to subject decent folk to those kinds of people.
