I’m going to Connecticut!

Unfortunately, nobody who reads this blog lives anywhere near Hartford (right?) so it’ll be a lonely visit. Or maybe I’ll be surprised. I’m going to be speaking at the Mark Twain House in Hartford on 18 June. A very distinguished venue…but just to teach me my place, Dan Brown will be speaking at the same institution two weeks earlier.

By the way, a lot of people have been telling me that they thought this Connecticut professor was me. I like his style, and he certainly is a handsome fellow, but no, that’s not me.

From the story at the link
    quoting the PZ look-alike
“We are all bonded together in that great spiritual web,” he said.
“The divine saturates nature the way that gravy saturates cornbread.”
    He’s good ;)

… the way that gravy saturates cornbread.

Wot the hell would a damn Connecticut yankee know about gravy ‘n’ cornbread?

I live in New Hampshire, but I’ll try to be there. I actually have a signed copy of your book already (it was a Chanukah present, ironically) but I would love to see you speak.

I heard that Katharine Hepburn was from there too. Wonder if she has a museum as well. She was an atheist when it was even less socially acceptable than today.

I am delighted to hear you will be speaking in our humble little state. The Mark Twain house will be a perfect venue for all of us to enjoy. See you all June 18th !!!!

PZ/James Boster – separated at birth?? Or is one a doppelganger of the other?

My brother lives right across the border in Mass. Unfortunately, he’s gone over to the dark side and has become a Catholic (mid-life crisis of some sort). I could needle him and urge him to go, but he’d probably stop speaking to me. Oh wait, he’s already done that.

I live in New Haven, CT, about 45 minutes south of Hartford.
Shortly after college, I lived about 1 block from the Mark Twain house.

    this Connecticut professor

Awesome; too bad only the bystanders will get his point.

Trebuchet. After a bit of practice, you should be able to land him — head-first if lucky(/desired?) — into a front-row-centre seat.

(I suggest a liberal application of superglue to the seat beforehand. Even if you miss, it should be amusing…)

I, too, live in Mass. about an hour away from Hartford. I pass the Mark Twain House about once a month on my way to NJ, to visit my Mum. Don’t know if I’ll be attending the lecture (maybe!); just had to let you know that there *are* Pharyngulites in the NewEngland area, they are not just in Minn and Ca.

I noticed that the Connecticut professor (Paul Churchland?) who mocks the campus preachers was censored by the university administration, which put out a statement which states:

“[e]veryone has the right to exercise free speech on our campuses. At the same time, we expect our faculty to act in a way that promotes civil discourse and to express themselves respectfully. The use of abusive language and a confrontational posture are inconsistent with UConn’s values.”

I also like the professor’s style and general idea of mockery, so I’m hoping that the condemnation was specifically against something a little dicey he did early on: stuck his face a few inches from the preacher’s and forced him to back up while screaming “Bullshit! Bullshit!” Yeah, that was over the line. But the rest of it was lovely.

Couldn’t have been PZ though. At one point you see him telling the crowd something about Jesus being all about love and acceptance.

    I approve this suggestion.

I won’t be in that area until the last of June, darn! Going to miss it by (holds up thumb and forefinger 1/4 inch apart, goes all Don Adams) that much.

I grew up a half hour from Hartford. I got to see Dawkins lecture at UCONN earlier this month, and now this? Not sure why I ever left CT.

  16. Bill The Splut says

You may be underestimating your CT readership, as I plan to be there. Unless my work schedule turns out to be irreduciblely complex.

  17. chigau (違う) says

    kinda off topic but
If you have not watched the video at gijoel#7…
    Watch it.
    I insist.

  18. teslaturing says

@teawithbertrand I can not get over the fact Dr. Dawkins was 15 minutes away from me and never even knew about it until your post. Glad to know someone is paying attention around here as I will now live with regret…until I see Dr.Myers.

  19. says

By the way. You may want to talk to your booking agent. Apparently an MZ Myers will also be speaking at the same place & time about the exact same topic!

  20. says

Dunno if anyone will see this, but just in case….

It turns out that I have a Democratic Town Committee meeting at exactly the same time as PZ’s talk. I would blow this meeting off to see the talk… if I weren’t the Chair!

I’m wondering if there are any plans for an after party or get-together that I might join later?
