Instead of being shot, the original hanging fits better with an erotic asphyxiation angle along with choking on various members (heh, he said members) of the execution squad. Snuff porn may also still be a thing, so there is that aspect as well. You’d have to avoid the initial pain segment and replace it with a reasonable explanation as to how hallucinated negotiations take place, maybe a too tight noose.
