Memo to self: when writing postings about a person, check to make sure they are not still alive and making news. Normally, when dealing with historical figures (e.g.: Lyudmila Pavlichenko [stderr]) we can safely assume they are not making more news. But …

Today’s the anniversary of the day that the French stormed La Bastille, the prison that had become a symbol of the power of the monarchy.
It’s hard to estimate the impact of movies that slant our way of seeing things. I think I was 15 or so when I saw Z the first time.

I do a lot of public speaking; usually a couple of conference keynotes, and a dozen or more invited talks every year. During conference dinners and meet and greets, there is sometimes alcohol, and it’s hard to pass up a free drink, especially when it’s sometimes quite excellent.
