More on Obama’s statement on same sex marriage

The fallout from president Obama’s statement yesterday that he was in favor of same sex couples having the same right to marry as any other couple has been interesting to observe.

There have been those who have found reasons to criticize it, saying that it was long overdue, that his emphasis that it was his personal opinion diluted the impact because he did not say that he was going to fight vigorously for it to become law, that he was saying this for political reasons to galvanize his base of supporters, that he was forced to do so by vice president Joe Biden’s statement, even that he was doing this because he needed ‘gay money‘ to counter the loss in Wall Street money that was now going to Mitt Romney. President Obama comes out in support of same sex marriage

I have been critical of Obama for a lot of things but I have to credit him on this. It is true that the tide is turning in favor of allowing same sex marriage but it is still a controversial topic and he could have punted it until after the election.

It partially takes away the bitterness left by the North Carolina vote.

Bill Donahue’s extraordinary defense

Bill Donahue, the head of the Catholic League, makes his living by loudly defending the Catholic Church against any and all criticisms. What is extraordinary are the arguments he uses. For example, one of his pet peeves is that the media is biased against his church and picks on them needlessly. His evidence? Disappointing result in North Carolina

The constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage and civil unions in North Carolina passed yesterday. Defeating it was perhaps too much to expect in a state that in 1875 passed an amendment that prohibited inter-racial marriage that stayed on the books until 1971, and even has a pastor who advocates that parents beat any children who show any signs of not being heterosexual. Austerians take a beating in Europe

All those governments in Europe who thought that it was a great idea to combat the recession by imposing drastic austerity measures and balancing their budgets by squeezing the poor, labor, and middle classes are taking well-deserved drubbings. Yesterday, the governments of France and Greece joined that of the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark in getting kicked out of office. [Read more…]
