The hapless Rick Perry has pulled the plug on his second run for president when it turned out that his current campaign had even less hap than last time. At least in 2012 he was seen as a viable candidate until the wheels started coming off after his ‘Oops’ moment, the risible failure of memory in one of the debates. This year he was seen as hopeless from the start.

We have seen that some of those who object to same-sex marriage have thrown up road blocks by saying that they will have nothing to do with any marriage, same-sex or opposite-sex, and that this means they are not discriminating against same-sex couples and thus they are honoring both Jesus and the law. Of course, they are also not carrying out the duties of their office and, if ordered by the courts to do so, can be found in contempt if they continue to refuse, as has happened in the case of Kim Davis in Kentucky.

TThe progressive politician, who had been a mere backbencher a few months ago and a total dark horse who had been given 500-1 odds of success, won easily with 59.5% of the vote, signaling an end to the Tory-lite Blairite dominance of the party that had prevailed for so long. By now many people would have heard about 35-year old former US tennis star James Blake being tackled by a plain clothes policeman while he was waiting outside the fancy Grand Hyatt hotel in New York City for a car to take him to the US Open. The police claim that it was a case of mistaken identity. The spectacle of protestors interrupting staged events is all too common. How the event organizers should respond is tricky, especially if the event is a political one where there may be strong passions on all sides and some groups may feel their views are not being represented adequately. How do you balance the need to let the protestors make their point and continue with the scheduled program without resorting to brute force and having the protestors physically silenced and removed? Event organizers may want to take a lesson from Stephen Colbert.

There is a group known as Oath Keepers whose membership consists of current and former military, police, and first responders who make it a point of sending heavily-armed people to places where there is tension. They have now descended on Rowan County to ‘protect’ Kim Davis, the Kentucky County clerk who has been refusing to issue marriage licenses because of her objection to same-sex marriage, from what they see as a tyrannical judge.

There has been a lot of media chatter today about Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about Carly Fiorina’s looks and her response to the insult, prompting once again the age-old question of whether it is possible for American politics to get even more trivial and the sad fact is that the answer always seem to be ‘yes’. Another flap the media is drooling over is Trump and the sanctimonious Ben Carson fighting it over who has more religious faith, as if it matters at all to governing. The media loves it when candidates trash talk each other and these will dominate the news cycle for a few days.
