Film review: Chasing Coral (2017)

I recently watched the above documentary that dealt with how the warming of the oceans is killing off the coral reefs all over the world. The filmmakers developed time-lapse cameras that they could place on the ocean floor to show how when temperatures rise even slightly, first the reefs get bleached white and then develop brown fibrous attachments all over them, giving them the look of ghostly apparitions. They focus a lot on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

When one sees this, one cannot help but share in the deep sadness that the people who made this film, and who love the coral reefs, feel when they see the destruction of such a beautiful and important part of the ecosystem. It is because these reefs are underwater that most people do not appreciate the scale of the destruction going on.

One also feels anger at the shortsightedness of the political and business leadership around the world, especially in the US, that shuts its eyes to the negative impact of global warming and refuse to take steps to even slow down or stabilize the greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, let alone try to reverse it. I wish they all could be made to see this film.

The documentary has some spectacular footage of reefs, with some of the best at the end during the extended credits.

The website for the film is here and the trailer is below.

” I wish they all could be made to see this film.”

Wouldn’t help. Answer would be “I don’t go diving”.

Same way they see glaciers melting as a skiers’ problem.
