Michelle Wolf laments the recent deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain and uses the occasion to reflect on the idea that social media seems to drive people to imply that their lives are better than they really are, and thus can depress others who are struggling.
Marcus Ranum says
It’s a push-pull. People want to see people who are more interesting, better looking, richer, etc. so that creates a celebrity ecosystem that establishes a feedback loop -- eventually it becomes surreal and someone comes along with a down-to-earth “grunge” appeal and the metacycle repeats.

For the family, close friends and employees to Spade and Bourdain their deaths were a sad event and they have my heartfelt sympathies.
For the other 99.9999999999999999999999999999999 percent of the world? Meh.
Frankly, I’d never heard of either before their deaths.
