You know I’m no fan of college football and think the whole institution is a perversion of the academic life, but there is an event coming up that makes me want to scream “GO DUCKS!”
The No. 8 Oregon Ducks (11-2) will play in the Fiesta Bowl against the No. 23 Liberty University Flames (13-0) on Jan. 1, the Bowl Season Committee announced on Sunday morning.
After a heartbreaking 34-31 loss to the No. 2 Washington Huskies (13-0) on Friday night in the Pac-12 Championship Game, the Ducks knew their playoff chances were gone, but still had a shot at making a New Year’s Six Bowl game.
As an alumnus of the University of Oregon, and as someone who utterly despises that bogus Christian sham of a “university”, Falwell’s Folly, I’d be tempted to watch the game so I could snarl my contempt of the jumped-up Bible college for a few hours. If it’s actually broadcast I might even put it on (but no, I don’t care enough to cough up cash for pay-per-view).
I didn’t even know about the playoff between my undergrad university, UW, and my grad school, UO, so I can’t get worked up about that game, either way. But hell yeah, stomp all over Liberty “University”. Make a Falwell cry. Although they probably don’t care either, Jerry (their ex-president) would probably be too busy having a ménage à trois with a poolboy.
God, guns, football. ‘Merica! That said, I hope the Ducks beat the theocrats.
The Oregon-Liberty game will be on ESPN at 1pm on January 1, 2024. I don’t think any of the bowl games are on pay-per-view. And Oregon will likely crush Liberty, so it should be a good viewing for you.
Do I even get ESPN? I don’t know.

It is Donald Duck. Oregon made a deal with Disney way, way back — in the 1920s, I think — to use the logo in perpetuity.
Disney would never make that deal nowadays.
Given the choice, I’d prefer the threesome with a poolboy.

The Duck (derived from the Webfoots team name) known as Puddles goes back to the 20s, but the deal with Disney was an informal handshake agreement reached in 1947. In the 70s, Disney lawyers questioned the deal but photos of Walt and the Oregon coach who spun the informal agreement proved it. So they signed a formal agreement in 1973.

I know when Ave Maria University was being founded, the Monoghan wanted three things:
1. conservative Catholic values
2. a nice golf course for when he comes to visit
3. a football team
Extremist Christians see sports as one of the best aspects of higher education…
Another example: Cons take over New College in Florida and start an athletics program and create a mascot while overseeing the destruction of the current faculty and student body.
Higher education simply needs to remove all sports above club level. Except for a few programs sports are simply a tax on students. At my alma mater, a few years ago, they computed that to support their football program every student’s tuition bill was increased by over a $1,000 a semester.

ESPN is on Disney+ deluxe, in particular it’s on the Hulu part of this package. So if you have this for your grandkids coming to visit you can ‘see the show’.
ESPN+ kinda sucks if you don’t have a cable or satellite package already (if you’re a cord-cutter). I looked into it so I could watch some college football but was disappointed as I couldn’t even dig into the archive. The licensing rights are a racket that punishes cord-cutters. Better off watching a local junior college women’s volleyball game on a public rabbit ear channel, which I did recently.
ESPN+ isn’t great for college football unless you’re a fan of smaller schools (like the teams in the MAC). If you’re into hockey or European soccer, it can be pretty fun.
