His position on guns is also horrific.
So why do I feel like there seems to be a lot of Texas voters who will read those as pro-Abbott ads? He’ll make those dirty pregnant women suffer, and he’ll let us all have great big guns that can turn children into hamburger, yeee-haaaw!

About 5 years ago I drove from Carlsbad Caverns to Houston through the Permian Basin in West Texas. It truly was a hellscape from all the drilling. Smelled like sulphur and petrochemicals, and I’m talking about hours and hours of driving. I don’t see how anybody could live there.
Sheridan said much the same thing more than 150 years ago. Twas ever thus.
I know quite a few people who live in Austin. While we don’t talk politics much (it’s work), they are intelligent and caring people. My impression is they do not support the Texas GOP agenda. So it’s not “Texas” (a place) or even “Texans” (a large, diverse population), but enough Texans with a long term program to skew state institutions in a particular way. The folks I know feel helpless to change the state government because GOP control of the government has made it possible for them to gerrymander the political lines to their benefit.

I feel like people often forget that there are good people trapped in these places when they criticize the people of any particular area. The Southern US has a significant population of poor Black and Brown (and more than a few Blue/White folks) folks who cannot leave and cannot vote to change their situations due to disenfranchisement and gerrymandering.
People advocating that we just need to throw the whole state away often forget there’s a significant population of captives living in those places (which is exactly what those people would become if any of their oppressor’s wishes came true.)
I always say that I don’t live in Texas, I live in Austin. The political landscape in Texas is changing, slowly but it is changing. Most of the metro areas are blue while the suburbs and rural areas are more red. Gerrymandering has had a big effect and is slowing the change. That said, the push to bring businesses to the state is changing the demographics and will probably turn it purple in another few years. Beto is only down by 7% at this point an that is an indicator where things are headed.

What stuns me, absolutely staggers me to the floor, is that with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the “State” can force a woman–OR a female CHILD–to risk her LIFE, giving birth to a child she doesn’t want, can’t afford, or who will suffer like in the ad.
But think about that: The State can force a woman or girl to RISK HER LIFE. That is what it comes down to. Risk you life and take on a life-long (if say, you do live) responsibility that will possibly ruin the lives of your entire family, for someone else’s morals.
I’m not American, but I seem to remember something about “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” being one of the foundations of your country. This obscenity of a law is putting all three at risk.
As for guns, if anything, I’m even more shocked about people putting their right to buy an assault rifle without check ahead of the right of their own children to be safe in their schools. I don’t know exactly why I’m shocked; I thought I’d given up on common sense on this issue after Sandy Hook happened and yet gun laws became more lax. But I guess this is a degree of disbelief that won’t go away. (I’m also sickened by the fact that guns are supposedly protected by your Constitution, but women are not. Am I wrong about this, and if not then What the Hell, America?)
I’m sorry if it seems I’m insulting your country. I’m not. I just want you all to be safer and happier. And for your country to stop making me scream, “What!?” at the TV every time the news is on.
