They had the same problem in 1925

Save the children!

What’s really sad is that some people would look at that cartoon and think the central figure is a hero, doing what is right.

Remember when the Texas GOP wanted to abolish the teaching of critical thinking? It was part of their platform.

    They left out a few.
Not too surprising, it is from 1925.

    Sex education
    Diversity
    Climate change and Global Warming
The latest would be CRT, Critical Race Theory, also known as…the history of America.

Yeah, we had a similar educational moral panic about the prospect of teaching critical thinking skills in Wisconsin during the “Outcome-Based Education” scare of the 90s. Apparently, teaching critical thinking was going to result in a generation that would question all adult authority, and we just couldn’t have that.

The cartoon got one thing right, the Tree of “Knowledge.” I guess knowledge is a bad thing, while ignorance is bliss.

I take it from the date it is about the Scopes Monkey trial ?Is the bloke in the cartoon meant to be William Jennings Bryan?

Looks like an evil Woody from Toy Story. “There’s a serpent in my boot!”

It’s almost like conservatism (whether instantiated in religion or politics or economics) has always been the ideology holding humanity back and preventing us from flourishing.

@3 “Apparently, teaching critical thinking was going to result in a generation that would question all adult authority, and we just couldn’t have that.”

It’s almost as if they’re trying to ban puberty. You don’t need critical thinking to question adult authority!

The New Yorker from the same year had a cartoon with the following dialog: “Pa, what’s all this talk about Evolution?” “Son, I’ll have to consult with my attorney before I can answer that question. I might be sent to jail for it.”
