I was just admiring this S. triangulosa that I found in the science building — an escapee returning to home? — and had to take a few photos. She’s very striking, with this high contrast black & white coloration.
I’ll tuck it below the fold for the arachnophobes.

I could swear I saw someone on YouTube make a glass vase with that exact pattern recently. I think they were both pretty . I still hate spiders though

Looks like an exquisitely made and polished glass bead.

That is a gem of a spider.

Beautiful. Hey, PZ, I think these robot makers could use your help, anatomically speaking.

You’re getting good at the photography thing. My macro photos suck. Are you still using focus stacking?
PZ Myers says
#5: None of these are focus-stacked.
#4: I drooled. But $950!

Do all spiders have such a huge abdomen (or thorax, or whatever it’s called), compared to the rest of their bodies? Looks kind of like an engorged tick. What’s taking up all that space inside?
PZ Myers says
She had a big meal, so she’s a bit plump.
The abdomen contains the heart and gut, silk glands, book lungs, and ovaries — lots of stuff packed in there.
Strewth says
Would make for a lovely ring.
Autobot Silverwynde says
Well, she’s cute.

I was thinking an ornament for a Christmas tree. She is lovely.

In our last house (Springton, South Australia) we had an acre block, and I remember the wilder section being chock-full of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austracantha
I hadn’t seen them before, and independently called them ‘jewel spiders’ — I was not surprised to later find that is actually one of their common names, it being so obvious when one sees them live.

What are the hairs that I see?
