Feeling existential today

And now, back to grading.

But wait.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful office
And you may tell yourself
These are not my beautiful papers.

Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…

And you may ask yourself
Am I right?…Am I wrong?
And you may say to yourself yourself
My God!…What have I done?!

Sorry. Lost it for a few minutes there. And now…I must go feed the fish.

David Byrne, rapping before rap was a thing.

Sometimes I think we don’t deserve artists like that.

He (and the rest of the band) are so incredibly talented. It really seems like we don’t have anyone currently doing music that is both conceptually challenging and popular.

I do wonder, though, with all the concerns about cultural appropriation (and the kerfuffle over Miley Cyrus using twerking), whether there would be objections today over the way other cultures’ dance moves/ritual motions are used here (including his most famous forearm chopping gesture).

#2 / Don: 1980? That’s also the year Blondie’s “Rapture” came out. Rap was by then definitely a thing – “Rapper’s Delight” came out in ’79, for example.
