Support Humanists on the Palouse

They’re doing some fundraising for their Darwin on the Palouse event in February. I spoke there a while back — it’s a great event in an area that needs this perspective.

Just cross the Idaho border, and what do you find? Doug Wilson and the New Saint Andrews College, where you can get steeped in both creationist literalism and racist apologetics. I suspect that they get quite a bit more cash flow than the humanists, so anything you can do to offset the imbalance will be appreciated.

Doug Wilson’s stomping grounds are literally within walking distance of the event venues this year. Luckily it’s a very diverse community so we get all types!

I had no sense of where ‘the Palouse’ was, so I had to look it up. It’s a river, a town, and a region. It’s nice to see that people are working to inform and supply alternatives in rural regions.

Thanks, PZ. Donated. Having gone to WSU, and having dealt with various fuckwits in the region (Scott Minnich, anyone?), I’m very happy to help the cause of reality.

I don’t think I’ll get there, but it sounds like a beautiful place. Anyone who goes should try to do a little sight-seeing. The landscape is full of little dunes formed of deep glacial silt and it’s quite beautiful. It’s also scientifically interesting because much of the soil was laid down in the Pleistocene. Repeated, huge floods from melting glaciers pooled in glacial lake Missoula and other temporary lakes and then broke out. The floods left metres of deep silt in the Scablands, which show the marks of giant rivers. From there, much of it blew to the Palouse, where the soil, called loess, retains its wind-sculptured forms: “Eureka Flat: How glacial outburst floods started the dust engine of the Pacific Northwest.”

There’s also a little bit of natural medium-grass prairie, which I’d never heard of before.

@coralline – I hope you have notifications on. I work with DOTP and we have one anonymous donation on Nov 13, which I’m pretty sure is you. I have no other way to contact you, so if you wanted to receive a T-shirt reward you need to get in touch with us as we don’t have any contact info for you. Thanks!
