It’s a good thing when atheists emerge from the closet, not just for themselves, but for everyone around them — we are Not Alone. Check out the project, and maybe you can submit a story to them, too.
As a relative newcomer here I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for this blog. You and the horde truly were the impetus for me to finally, finally find the guts to admit that I was an atheist rather than continuing to try and appease other people by calling myself agnostic. Well, you guys in conjunction with the recent Teapublican effort to drag the country back to the dark ages. There’s nothing quite like a fundamentalist Christian trying to force the entire country to live by their backwards, regressive, oogum-boogum beliefs to get you off the fence – at least in my case.
But, finding a blog like this, with its non-apologetic full-on atheism, and realizing that there are a whole passel of people who are atheist and not going to apologize for it or hide it, is one of the greatest public services you can imagine. Thanks again. /end of mushy stuff

This reminds me: There hasn’t been a “Why I am an Atheist” post for a while now. Did you finally go through all the submissions?
At this stage, people who call themselves atheists sadly do not get a good person credit from me anymore, rather I expect the worst. Too many have shown themselves to be atheists just for the kick of feeling smugly superior to the religious while otherwise being amoral selfish assholes.
@rorwchach Have you actually looked at the aim of the project, or any of the stories? Nobody said anything about it being worthy of credit in and of itself.
Oh look it’s Marty Pribble, who will keep PZ Myers and Russell Blackford close by at the same time, because taking a position and a side might damage his blog hits. Surely the most odiously opportunistic wanker in all of atheism.

No one should get a “good person credit” unless the individual person has shown that they deserve it. As someone once said: Respect must be earned.

How’s about some examples of what you’re talking about so we can at least address your criticisms? Which people have done what you claim?
“At this stage”? What stage is that? If it’s anything to do with the misogyny problem you should know from this forum alone and others that it’s something that is being fought against.
It’s one thing to make a claim, it’s another to back it up. It should be easy for you since you seem to have found so many examples of it.
Are there smug assholes in atheism? Yes. Just as there are in every other group. Is this becoming a serious problem in atheism? We don’t know. Not until you show us.

When I read “we are Not Alone” I thought we found some sort of atheist extraterrestrials.

rorschach – Don’t lose any sleep over the fact that you assume I’m not a good person and must be a smug asshole – I know I won’t.

How’s about answering the question instead of acting like an uh…”smug asshole”?
