In yet another article about obsessed harassing fuckwit “elevatorgate”, we get an interesting revelation.
In the Google doc briefly viewed by Mother Jones, elevatorgate wrote that he does not use his real name on social media because doing so could make him a target of harassment.
Yeah, we might storify him or photoshop his face into compromising images or send non-stop email notifications to him — you know, the stuff he does to his targets.
After all that linking and roundup of the issues, MoJo didn’t say one word about stalking nor about real-world safety concerns arising from collated online information. I is disappoint.

It’s not our broken irony meters that are the problem, it’s that elevatorgate’s stopped working some time ago and he has been operating in the red zone of extreme irony, unaware.
I think the level of asinine wanking regularly achieved on the #FTBullies hashtag has caused me to recalibrate my irony meter to far less sensitive levels, multiple times now, and then comments with a colossal lack of self-awareness like this one come along and still manage to break it. It’s fractally wrong.
Some people refuse to see the difference between Free Speech and “free speech”. Free Speech means you cannot be arrested for saying something, unless it can be shown you wanted your words to result in physical harm to someone else. “free speech” is the last defense of a wicked coward, who, unable to defend their words on their own merits, must hide behind the legality of saying them.
I had a nagging suspicion the article was going to be awful as soon as the issue was framed as “free speech”. Is there no message so horrible, with criticism so minor, that you can’t imagine it being defended by claims of “free speech”? Useless.

If the argument is that elevatorgate isn’t harassing anyone because the words are not hir own and are simply collected without any additional (hateful) intent or addition, then how is this an issue of free speech?
To make that argument, one has to admit that the Storify collections are not merely neutral re-postings.
Some people defend free speech like the ACLU who puts legal defenses to challenges.

If EG was putting that kind of (well, any) editorial effort into making it ‘feminist twitter arguments’ versus ‘I am watching you tweet, saving every word’, it would look a lot less creepy and harassing.
