A symbol of two thousand years of European mischief?
“1776”, Benjamin Franklin, from memory. He, himself, advocated the Turkey as national bird, for various eminently sensible reasons.

PZ, it’s been a rough night and I hate the fucking eagles, man…

“I think we own the symbolism of all eagles everywhere, don’t we?”

Oi! Keep your rotten Yankee graspers off our ‘wedgies’ (that’s wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax) for those not fortunate enough to live in ‘Straya).

What gorgeous dinosaurs birds. Have a look at the Philippine Eagle (aka monkey-eating eagle, not that it’s the only eagle that eats monkeys) – there is such diversity even within the species of eagles.

You know how many smart bombs we could plant in their nests?

No worries about eagles taking over, though. Wind turbines have already got that possibility covered

It’s common knowledge that the only eagles complaining about being killed by wind turbines are those that failed to negotiate rental agreements with the turbine farm builders.

I wonder what it is about eating fish that selects for white head and tail in eagles. Perhaps it changes their silhouette against the sky?

  10. lpetrich says

The African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) is a close relative of the bald eagle (H. leucocephalus) and various other sea-eagle species. Some of them have white heads, while some others don’t (Sea eagle – Wikipedia).

No, the Mexicans have, it, too. One of their national birds is the Golden Eagle (prominently displayed on the flag…the other is the Caracara). Scotland’s is the Golden Eagle, too.

Germany’s national bird is the White-tailed Eagle.

Spain has the Spanish Imperial Eagle.
