“love getting and staying naked”!

It’s almost getting to be a law of human nature, this event is becoming so common.

Meet Representative Phil Hinkle of Indiana. He’s a Republican. He’s strongly against gay marriage — he has voted to make it illegal.

And…you know exactly where this is going, don’t you? Every single one of you out there, even if you haven’t seen it in the news already, are sitting there, nodding your head, rolling your eyes, confident that you already know what this is about.

You’re making me feel totally superfluous, you know? Why should I even bother writing this up, when you know-it-alls can see it coming from a thousand miles away? Dammit, you’re making me feel useless.

Try to at least pretend to be surprised, OK? Just humor me.

Rep. Hinkle tried to score a rent-boy for an evening out on the town this past weekend.

Put on your shock-horror faces for just a minute, please.

OK, now you can stop putting on the act. Yeah, Hinkle browsed Craigslist for young men, found a good-looking fellow with his shirt off, and sent him an email.

“Cannot be a long time sugar daddy,” the email reads, “but can for tonight. Would you be interested in keeping me company for a while tonight?”

The email offers “to make it worth (your) while” in cash, and offers a personal description: “I am an in shape married professional, 5’8″, fit 170 lbs, and love getting and staying naked.”

Apparently, the price of a rent-boy in Indianapolis is $80, plus a $60 tip if he does a good job, plus giving him your blackberry and iPad in a desperate attempt to keep him quiet afterwards. This is good to know in case I ever turn into a homophobic Republican and rent-boy rentals become obligatory.

By the way, I’m a healthy married professional, 5’10”, 195 lbs (and shrinking), and I don’t mind being naked in the privacy of my home, but I tend not to flaunt it, and don’t regard it as a major selling point. Do I need to put these data on my business card? Or is it only relevant if I’m a Republican?

    What about your iPad?

  2. says

PZ, you didn’t mention that when the young man got freaked by being with a public figure Hinkle said that he wouldn’t let him leave the room until they had sex.

Hinkle didn’t just try to score a rent boy, he (allegedly snerk) tried to rape one.

  3. says

I had not heard about this, however I am hardly surprised. This seems to happen with some regularity, I had been wondering recently what the next Republican sex scandal would be. If only they realized that the fallout would not be so bad if they had not hypocritical, bigoted, homophobes.

I am also shocked the going rate is $80/hour. That is pretty low, but I guess the tip makes up for it somewhat. Is the Indianapolis economy in the dumps?

  4. says

Hinkle didn’t just try to score a rent boy, he (allegedly snerk) tried to rape one.

Oh this is lovely too. Sadly many clients seem to be insecure but demanding jackasses. I will not be surprised at all if it comes out that he also demanded bareback sex. It would just seem so typical.

  5. moggie says

Isn’t giving a prostitute your Blackberry kind of a bad idea? Unless “giving a Blackberry” is a euphemism I’m not aware of.

  6. pinkboi says

This makes me wonder… are all the crazy anti-islamicists secretly Muslim? Or secretly having Arab call girls?

  7. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

I am also shocked the going rate is $80/hour.

Was it an hour? I thought it was for the night?

And I charge WAY more than $80.00/hr for my photography and the only luggage I’m carrying is my own.

  8. Beatrice, anormalement indécente says

    Surprise! Shock!
    ….. Oh well, I tried.

    moggie,

Yes, giving someone you want to keep quiet about your “indiscretions” a way to contact your family/friends/colleagues doesn’t seem like a very bright move.

  9. says

Unfortunately, this will barely make a blip on mainstream news sources (maybe MSNBC?) since IOKIYAR.
I live in hope of being proven wrong though.

  10. Randomfactor says

Now, I’m going to have to agree with him on the “naked” part. Clothes are as unnatural as gay weddings.

  11. says

I will not be surprised at all if it comes out that he also demanded bareback sex.

I have heard stories where one partner rapes the other because the other one didn’t want unprotected sex. I really hope that he didn’t do that to any of his rentboys.

  12. says

    Rev. BigDumbChimp,
Oh, I just assumed it was an hour because it was so low. I have known a few sex workers and $80 would have gotten you 30 minutes, maybe.

  13. Ms. Daisy Cutter says

“To hinkle” already seems to mean “to play with one’s own or someone else’s testicles.”

I think another definition could go there just as easily, don’t y’all?

  14. Rich Woods says

This makes me wonder… are all the crazy anti-islamicists secretly Muslim? Or secretly having Arab call girls?

I bet they’re insanely jealous over not getting 72 virgins once they reach CloudCuckooLand.

  15. Midnight Rambler says

I have heard stories where one partner rapes the other because the other one didn’t want unprotected sex.

    You’re referring to Julian Assange?

  16. SQB (too lazy to log in) says

And that is why Michele Bachmann is going to be the Republican candidate — she’s less likely to pull something like this.

  17. Midnight Rambler says

This makes me wonder… are all the crazy anti-islamicists secretly Muslim? Or secretly having Arab call girls?

If they are, they’re a lot better at keeping the latter quiet, except for Silvio Berlusconi boinking a 16 year old Moroccan stripper. I don’t know how much of an anti-islamicist he is though?

    Bunga bunga!

  18. moggie says

    SQB:

And that is why Michele Bachmann is going to be the Republican candidate — she’s less likely to pull something like this.

Her husband, on the other hand…

    Is she ?

  21. Kevin Anthoney says

Is there a list of repugs (or dems, to be fair) who have voted against gay marriage and haven’t been caught having gay sex? You could make a great game of bingo with it.

  22. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

Kevin Anthoney, that list would be far too small for a bingo game.

  23. raven says

I’m waiting for Tony Perkins, Scott Lively, and Dean Bradley to get caught.

The statistics say that one or more of them are notgay gays. Probably all three are notgay gay.

  24. Merrily Dancing Ape says

There was a study a few years back in which homophobic men and non-homophobic men were shown gay porn, and — what do you know — the homophobes started to get boners.

    https://my.psychologytoday.com/files/u47/Henry_et_al.pdf

As a side note, there was also a study that found that people in red states (in which people are likely to agree with the statement “I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage”) subscribe to more porn.

  25. lurker_above says

    Shame on you, PZ.

Hinkle’s obviously working to solve the unemployment problem–one man at a time.

  26. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

I’m not surprised, not anymore. I’m actually starting to get rather annoyed, though. These men can’t just do the normal thing and proposition someone for some mutual fun?

They have to go after at-risk youth or desperate young men on Craigslist and rent boy sites in order to find anyone who will have sex with them? And then, after being denied, as in this particular case, get indignant and aggressive about it?

There’s a problem here. It’s a worse problem than the enormous hypocrisy of these men. It’s the fact that these hypocrite men are, essentially, using a group they marginalise in order to fulfill a denied sexuality; a group that arguably wouldn’t have so many at-risk youth and desperate young men asking for cash for sex if only they weren’t being marginalised by the very people paying for the sex.

    My head hurts.

  27. Ing says

Is there a list of repugs (or dems, to be fair) who have voted against gay marriage and haven’t been caught having gay sex?

Actually listing Dems isn’t “To be fair” it’s “to be balanced”. Has there ever actually BEEN an anti-gay democrat caught in such a scandal? If not then it’s a false equivalency that seeks only to minimize how toxic the GOP is.

  28. says

Fear not PZ – I hadn’t heard about this either, can’t say I’m shocked, but this particular incident is news to me.

This kind of thing seems to be so cliche now that I figure there should be a game made of it. Find the nut bag’s first publicly verifiable utterance of things like making gay marriage illegal, and start a countdown clock on how long until they’re caught in an ironically compromising situation as above.

Run properly, it could be a hilarious (and profitable) gambling site. Place your bets! :-P

  29. Balthasar25 says

This is perfectly in line with his political beliefs.

He didn’t want to “marry” the rentboy, just engage in some friendly docking.

    What’s the harm in that?

  30. Azkyroth says

I wonder if there’s an article on Wikipedia of anti-gay activists who were found out to be gay…

Or more precisely, to have a history of same-sex sexual encounters.

  31. backfrommars says

Sigh… It is well known that if a person displays recurrent dismay over any sexual behavior it is because they are repressing something. It doesn’t matter how good your arguments are or how righteous. If you’re harping on it then you are letting your id do your talking.

  32. Ing says

    @Merrilydancingape

I wouldn’t put too much stock in those studies though. Those types studies also say that there are no bisexual males.

  33. Balthasar25 says

This is perfectly inline with his political views.

He doesn’t want to “marry” the rentboy, just engage in some friendly docking.

    What’s the big deal?

  34. Ing says

It is well known that if a person displays recurrent dismay over any sexual behavior it is because they are repressing something.

So how do you feel about scat porn?

  35. Audley Z. Darkheart OM (OS), purveyor of candy and lies says

    Balthasar:

He didn’t want to “marry” the rentboy, just engage in some friendly docking.

Are you using the Urban Dictionary definition of “docking”? If so, LOL!

  36. backfrommars says

So how do you feel about scat porn?”

Honestly, a load of crap. But I’m not out on a crusade against it.

  37. Naked Bunny with a Whip says

So how do you feel about scat porn?

I don’t buy the “homophobes are all repressed homosexuals” thesis, but I’m not sure what kind of angle you’re going for here. Does BackFromMars have a history of publicly railing against the fact that someone, somewhere, is enjoying scat porn?

  38. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

Balthasar25, it’s not an unpopular sexual activity among gay men. There’s a niche for porn of it, and there has been for years. You might say that it’s in the Urban Dictionary, but it’s not ‘the Urban Dictionary version’. Not that I have much experience with docking. My parents precluded that possibility.

  39. Balthasar25 says

Thomathy I was actually just clarifying for Audley at post 44. I was simply responding using similar language as her post.

  40. M says

As someone falling under and identifying with the B in LGBT, this sort of stuff always just makes me sad to be honest.

Sad and irritated. At least I did once read about a Republican representative who quit his job over it because he was gay and he couldn’t do this shit anymore. But it’s quite depressing to see how it usually go.

I blame machismo. Religion as well, but machismo even more so. Especially for young homophobes. I mean the people who made ‘gay’ the new ‘lame’, where probably not fundies. Young non-church goers strikes me as far more likely.

Machismo isn’t often addressed though. Lots of insecure males on the internet who pretend their tough and cool. Funny how the nerds emulate their hated jock enemies and seem to want to be them.

  41. says

You forgot to mention that Hinkle is the one who pushed the stupid In God We Trust license plates on the state. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

And now you understand some of the motivation behind sexism. Ensure that a significant number of young women are marginalised and at risk, and you have a ready supply to exploit for prostitution.

  43. says

Funny how the nerds emulate their hated jock enemies and seem to want to be them.

I find “nerds” to be another form of “manliness” to be honest, which explain why they espouse a lot of homophobia and sexism. Macho, manliness, and masculinity are culturally constructed, after all, and therefor subjected to variations. Nerds are simply a non-standard masculine form as opposed to “Jocks”* in our culture. Both have their toxic elements.

But you’re right. It’s obvious that fundies are homophobic and harmful to LGBT folks, but many times homophobia is perpetuated by non-fundie people.

*Funny thing is that I qualified as both a nerd and jock and neither at some point.

  44. Dianne says

At this point I’d be shocked if there were a homophobic Republican out there who didn’t get caught with a young man or two.

I’m not convinced that that means that they’re all gay though. Human sexuality is pretty fluid and a lot of these guys may be getting off more on the element of the forbidden than on the gender of their partners per se. I just wish they didn’t involve us in their kink for “naughty” sex though.

  45. cyberCMDR says

Reminds me of a statement I read a while back. “Anyone who says they are too honest or intelligent to get into politics is condemned to be represented by those who are dumber and have less integrity.” We need a better crop of politicians out there. Any volunteers?

  46. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

Truthspeaker, I don’t disagree that that’s a motivation for sexism, but why, in this context, do you bring it up, and why do you (seem to) address me specifically? I imagine that you don’t mean to infer that I don’t understand some of the motivation about (woman directed) sexism and are likely using the word ‘you’ in the collective sense, but I’d still appreciate some clarification.

You’ll excuse me, I’m sure, if I seem to be being ridiculously nit-picky, especially if I’m just reading your post wrongly, if I explain that it’s been a really long day full of minutiae.

  47. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

Why am I seeing Ron Paul ads plastered all over your blog?

The ad supplier looks for certain terms, and supplies ads with those terms. So we get ads for Xian dating services, RW t-shirts, creobot books, and the like. So Ron Paul is mentioned, so ads for him appears. Next is rent-a-boy sites.

  51. Vicki, running low on patience says

    Dianne,

I think you’re right about the appeal of the forbidden, at least in some cases. Possibly the thrill of risk, as well: if that’s their kink, the chance of being caught with a male prostitute might be more charged than the chance of being caught having an affair with a woman.

But I also think some of them are trying to have it both ways: they want the money, prestige, etc. of their political jobs, and they want sex with other men. And they’d want the latter even if there was no risk of being caught (either because it wasn’t a risk, or because they could be absolutely sure of not being found out, and knew it).

    Gnumann,

Congratulations, there are now. Fortunately, I don’t have to google for them.

  52. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

People, you don’t have to see the ads at all, whatever their content. There are add-ons for that. Also, the site loads much faster sans ads.

  53. Thomathy, now gayer and atheister says

Yeah, I was thinking about that when I was writing my post. It’s too bad, really. Though, I wonder, is the revenue from the ad appearing? Or is it from the clicking? I wouldn’t click on the ads anyhow, so I do wonder about the impact. /OT

I hope he can come to terms with himself and accept his entire self…and it wouldn’t hurt to start accepting others as well. It would be nice if his district was supportive of GLBT issues; that would make his current situation a bit more hopeful. But his district voted against same-sex marriage and civil unions, and Indiana provides no legal rights for LGBT individuals.

Maybe he should contact his representative.

This is similar to a situation brewing here in my lovely home state of Missouri. Missouri has a system where the lieutenant governor is elected separately from the governor, so very often the two positions are split across party lines. Lt. Governor Peter Kinder is gearing up to run against Jay Nixon, the incumbent, and is a pretty conservative, family-values type Republican, though he himself is unmarried. And, of course, he was recently caught red-handed running around St. Louis with a lady stripper.

Now, do I think strippers are capable of being loving, caring, wonderful people? Well, of course I do. But I’m not sure a guy like Kinder, who claims to be “for family values” had that in mind when he met this particular exotic dancer. He also claims he broke off his contact with the dancer in question, and claims the photo of them from earlier this year was from a chance encounter. Right… okay… sure, Mr. K.

  58. Kagehi says

Yeah, somehow I kind of figured that this wasn’t about a Rethuglican deciding to join the Chaplain from An Apostate’s Chapel, at a nudist camp. To be fair, the data in the study you’re referring to didn’t really say that, the conclusion was an overreach and obviously not justified by the experiment results, unless one assumes that ‘bisexual’ means ‘attracted to both sexes equally and all the time’. So I wouldn’t say that the method of data collection is necessarily impugned by this.

They may not always get caught with their hands in the gay cookie jar, but all seem terrified that somewhere, someone is having fun with sex. 69. ckitching says

It’s patently obvious that 99% of all sexual wierdos are male. How many times do we read of women doing screwball sexual things to screw up their lives?

It’s not the penis. It’s the power. Almost all of this comes down to having power, and wishing to use it against someone else. If we ever actually manage to build an egalitarian society, I’m certain we’ll have just as many women acting badly, although perhaps this ‘acting badly’ will take slightly different forms.

all the time. it’s only because we’re relatively egalitarian here that we don’t notice this, because generally, the bar for what is “screwball sexual things” that can “screw up their lives” for women is set so low, it might as well be lying on the ground.

Now, how many anti-gay activists/politicians who got caught getting their man fun on have ended up by coming out of the closet and ending the hypocrisy by switching to an equality platform. I only know of the one from the California state legislature. I don’t know what it’s doing for his political career, but he did seem happier not to be living a lie afterwards.

Happily, the comments on that article are “currently unavailable”. The article itself is enraging enough, however. As the Fail reported it, the judge seemed more concerned about the woman’s infidelity than about the fact that she abused a child. A child who tried to kill himself when she ended the relationship.

I doubt that really was the judge’s priority, but it’s what the Daily Mail decided was important.

    H-Bomb:

ckitching, why?!?! Why do you do this to us? Those comments are a cesspool of sexist, chauvinist double standards. It makes my brain hurt.

Rule of thumb: if you don’t want to despair for humanity, stay away from the Daily Mail, or at least the readers’ comments.

If a man spends a good portion of his life obsessing about homosexuality, wouldn’t you be surprised if it turned out he wasn’t gay?

Tiger woods is no worse than Bill Clinton, and Bill Clinton is a pretty cool guy.

The whole point of becoming the most powerful man in the world is so that you can get blown in the oval office.

I’m all for open relationships, polyamory, and other forms of non-monogamy, but what Clinton did was still wrong. At the very least, he took advantage of women he had power over. In this context, it’s hard to ensure that they all truly consented. There was most likely and abuse of power in some of the cases.

There’s also the issue of crossing boundaries with his wife. Even open relationships and polyamorous ones have boundaries. It’s not really possible to know what kind of relationship Bill and Hilary had, but there’s a good chance that he lied to her and that she was not comfortable with him doing this. He also put her at risk of getting STDs if she didn’t know what he was doing and she wouldn’t even take extra precautions if she was unaware of his behavior. There’s also a pretty good chance that he would be pissed if she had affairs with other men, which is hypocritical.

Non-monogamy can be fantastic but it’s still wrong to lie to your partner and to abuse your power. Clinton isn’t as bad as Fambly Values Republicans, but he was still wrong.

Hinkle is my state rep. I’ve always loathed the guy’s politics. I admit to significant satisfaction from this event. The local paper more or less buried it–it ws hard to find two days later–but the Democrats certainly will remember it, and his margin wasn’t that high in my district.

So at least, maybe, my district won’t have to deal with this loathesome toad any more.

Not that there aren’t plenty more available.

There is also the notorious case of the 22 year old school teacher in Florida who was getting it on with one of her 14 year old male students. She was given a slap on the wrist via a plea bargain. Imagine if it was a 22 year old male teacher getting it on with a 14 year old female student. He’d being doing 10 to 25 for statutory rape.

Of course the problem here is that, if the case had gone to trial, there would probably be all too many men on the jury who, given that the woman was hotter then the 4th of July, would be thinking, “why couldn’t I have had an opportunity like that when I was 14.”

If they are, they’re a lot better at keeping the latter quiet, except for Silvio Berlusconi boinking a 16 year old Moroccan stripper. I don’t know how much of an anti-islamicist he is though?

It depends on whom is in the audience.

Tell that to certain guest columnists filling in for Dan Savage.

Hell, I’d blow Rick Perry or Marcus Bachmann even though I’d never blown a guy before just for the chance to film them and take them out. But I’d wait to release the video until after the convention, when either Perry or Bachman was on the ticket. Timing is everything.

Talk about taking one for the team!

  88. TonyJ says

“And that is why Michele Bachmann is going to be the Republican candidate — she’s less likely to pull something like this.”

What are you talking about? She sleeps with a gay guy every night.

  89. Richard Eis says

Roy Zimmerman will never be out of a job, will he?

No, but if this keeps up, that song is going to need an intermission.

Being gay is getting a bad rap for being associated with republicans! They are ruining our image!

    …and TonyJ wins an internet.

When asked if David Dreier was passed over for the job due to his “moderate” views, openly-gay Democratic Congressman Barney Frank told the press “Yes, in the sense that I marched in the moderate pride parade last summer and went to a moderate bar.”

    :D
