The Fifth International Volvox Conference will be July 26-29, 2019 at the University of Tokyo Hongo campus. For past meetings, generous support from organizations such as the American Genetic Association, the Company of Biologists, Wellcome Trust, and the Phycological Society of America has allowed the organizing committee to award travel fellowships to students and postdocs. It’s not yet clear if that will be the case for next year’s meeting.
Stephanie Höhn has helpfully put together a list of outside travel grants available to students and/or postdocs, along with their deadlines and membership requirements:
- British Phycological Society: 1 Dec 2018, 1 Feb 2019, 1 May 2019. One has to be a member for 3 months before applying!
- International Phycological Society: (under Grants and Awards), Paul C. Silva Student grant (graduate students): 31 Dec 2018 and 30 March 2019
- Society for Experimental Biology/Company of Biologists: 31 Dec 2018 and 31 March 2019. One must be in the second year of membership or pay for a multi-year membership.
- Royal Society of Biology: 1 March 2019
If you are planning to go, and especially if you’ll be traveling from outside of Japan, it would be a good idea to start putting together your applications now. Even if the committee is able to provide travel fellowships this time, it doesn’t seem likely that they’ll cover the whole cost of travel from the U.S. or Europe. Some of those deadlines are less than two months away!
