An ad aimed at Brendan O’Neill and people who admire him.
It’s not fake. It’s from a campaign for Basics, a clothing company in Chennai. Here’s the ad with the man in question.
It’s the Clarkson-O’Neill version of “manhood” – be the biggest bully you can possibly be, and congratulate yourself on being it.
Marcus Ranum says
That’s early 80’s preppie wear, redux (or should I say “reflux”?) Right down to the loafers.
You don’t have to be sherlock holmes to tell the guy’s an asshole: he’s wearing a watch in a swimming pool. First off: watch. Second off: water.
rosiebell says
I thought the Alpha Male ideal was that the waiter would recognise you, a say, Ah, Mr Clarkson, We’ve got the Entre-Cordiale 1983 kept specially for you, & Anton has the Aberdeen Angus hung for 3 months ready for cooking to the exact right bloodiness. James Bond never yelled at waiters.
Ophelia Benson says
Well there’s the James Bond version but there’s also the bloods’ version. There’s certainly a long and robust tradition of upper class louts behaving badly.
Morgan says
Apparently it’s possible to make yelling at waiters “look good”. How?
Ysidro says
Apparently Basics got yelled at like they were waiters and apologized.

Basics says:
celebrated all kinds of men with a bit of humour
Oh, they were just kidding. (eyeroll)

I don’t know if this ad would work even for the guys it’s apparently aimed at. It’s message seems to be “Hey, we think you’re kind of loathsome, but if you’ll kindly buy our apparel we will overlook your numerous faults.”

“Buy our product, you pathetic wanker” would have saved some ink.
Dunc says
That’s a serious ad? It’s not satire? They really went with “You’re a gigantic asshole with absolutely no taste or class” as a marketing strategy?
I don’t want to live in this world any more.
