I like this guy more and more. For the same reason a handful of greed-crazed zillionaires are liking him less and less:
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS — Pope Francis’ recent critical comments about the wealthy are potentially scaring off millionaire donors for the $180 million restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. That’s the message that billionaire Ken Langone, founder of Home Depot, passed along to Timothy Cardinal Dolan during a recent breakfast meeting. Langone, who’s spearheading the restoration of St. Patrick’s, told CNBC on Monday that some wealthy Catholics were balking at giving their financial support to the project in the wake of the Pope’s teachings.
Is Langone still in charge of Home Depot? If so, that would be a good reason to boycott Home Depot.
I still don’t like all his views but he’s better than any pope I remember.
I guess the Pope said that you can’t buy your way into heaven.
I was sure I was going to be the first to note the new pope looks like Jeffrey Tambor’s George Bluth from Arrested Development, but I’m apparently a couple of months too late for that.
I have been very heartened by this new pope. While I at one level understand and share PZ’s take on him, I can’t help but feel that the lesser of two evils is still less evil. I’m not sure that’s praise-worthy, exactly (though I have praised the pope’s statements about the rich), but it’s damned well worth celebrating that there is less evil in the world because the new standard of evil is less evil than the old standard of evil.
If you see what I’m sayin’.
The fact the pope is demonstrably pissing off the wealthy? That’s worth celebrating, if not praising. If you ask me.
Eh, I think of it more as war within two silly groups, which is far more amusing.
Pissing off the wealthy? Yes please. Pissing off the catholic church? Yes please. I’ll take it all.
Even a stopped watch is right once a day. (damn you people insisting on watches need 12 numbers instead of 24) But like all the rest of these ‘This pope isn’t being as horrible as past popes’ articles, I’ll care once any of the fundamental problems actually change.
But Best Buddy Francis is still excommunicating priests who wanted to back ordaining women and accepting gays. Sooooooo for half a shuffle-forward, and three hops back. Nothing new to see here. Move along.
He likes you less and less.
In his Encyclical Lumen Fidei, he said that it is impossible for non-Catholics to tell good from evil and they are doomed to spend their lives running around in circles and getting nowhere. (section 3)
He also claimed that goodness comes from only from God and the lives of non-Catholics are futile and their works are barren. (section 19)

Well, regarding social inequality, we have heard many warm words from pope Francis. Have we seen any deeds from the head of one of the wealthiest organisations in the world? Not really.
Up till now, I don’t see much more than a good PR strategy…
He’s just a guy. Don’t get too caught up in him being a leader or a celebrity or whatever. He’s just a guy like anyone else. He’s right about some things and wrong about others like all of us are. When you act like he has to be taken as an all or nothing proposition you’re falsely saying if he’s right about the poor he’s also right about homosexuality, which is just silly.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT a minute. He rakes rich people over the hell coals for not being generous. Then tries to raise 180 million dollars
to feed Africato restore a cathedral. The catholic church. Asking for money. The obscenely rich catholic church asking for money, a shit ton of money, for maintenance of one of their properties. Headed by a dude who says rich people should be less scrooge-like. *and then my head asploded despite the fact that this is utterly unsurprising*
