A common trick by magicians is to riffle a deck of cards in front of someone so that the person gets a view of cards as they rapidly pass by their gaze, and ask them to choose one. The magician then produces that same card from elsewhere, say out of their pocket. How is that done?

Two hearse drivers were fired after someone reported that they had stopped at a donut shop while transporting a body from one place to another. What apparently outraged a bystander who noticed the parked hearse was that the casket was flag-draped and thus likely contained the body of a military veteran.

Emily McDowell developed stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 24. As she went through life dealing with it, she encountered what many people dealing with serious illness or personal tragedy face, the utter cluelessness of even well meaning people who somehow, with all the options available to them, manage to say exactly the wrong thing.

One of the developments that I welcomed was that boxing seemed to have declined in popularity and esteem as more and more people realized that it was barbaric to watch two people try to beat each other senseless and turned way from it. I was hoping that American football would witness a similar drop for the same reason.

Some commenters have had problems logging in to their accounts ever since Google shut down the Open ID accounts. The people behind the scenes at FtB are aware of the problem and working on a fix, such as trying to convert the Open ID accounts to regular FtB accounts

Elizabeth Bentivegna, a senior at Oberlin College, was invited for an interview for a summer job at a Cleveland software company. Although she had alerted them that she would be late for her 4:00pm interview and in fact did arrive about 20 minutes after, she felt the interview went really well and so she was devastated when she was turned down.

Keith Allison was an elementary school tutor in rural Ohio who happens to be a vegan. He promotes veganism on his Facebook page and one such post said “the cruelty of separation, loneliness, an infant slaughter lingers inside each glass of cow’s milk. Your voice can change the system. You don’t have to support this. Plant-based milks are everywhere and are delicious.” He also posted photos of baby calves in small crates.
