Is the GOP trying to alienate women?

It looks like GOP trash talking of women is not limited to just weird JD Vance. Listen to what Ohio Republican senate candidate Bernie Moreno, currently in a tight race with incumbent Democratic senator Sherrod Brown, said.

We don’t have to engage in such thought exercises after Friday, when Moreno was filmed dismissing suburban women’s focus on abortion rights at a town hall (the local NBC affiliate first published the footage Monday):

“You know, the left has a lot of single issue voters,” Moreno said. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … Okay. It’s a little crazy by the way, but — especially for women that are like past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”

The campaign furiously backpedaled, telling NBC4 that he was “clearly making a tongue-in-cheek joke” about the left thinking that it’s the only issue women care about.

Ah, yes, the old “I was just joking” defense, often rolled out after someone says what they really mean that turns out to be offensive.

Also, Moreno thinks that it is a “little crazy” for abortion to be a concern for women over 50, presumably because they cannot get pregnant. But like so many anti-abortion extremists, he sees no problem with it being an issue for men.

Even Nikki Haley is appalled by the tone-deafness on display.

Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley is going after Republican Ohio Senate nominee Bernie Moreno for comments he made concerning many suburban women’s views on abortion.

Haley slammed Moreno’s comment in a post on the social platform X, suggesting the comment could risk the election in a fierce race against incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D).

“Are you trying to lose the election? Asking for a friend. #Tonedeaf #DonLemonVibes,” Haley said, referring to comments then-CNN anchor Don Lemon made last year saying Haley, 51 at the time, wasn’t “in her prime.”

Brown’s team seized on Moreno’s remarks to blast him.

Brown also pilloried Moreno for his remarks, arguing the GOP candidate “thinks he knows better than the 57% of Ohioans who made themselves clear on this issue.” Voters in Ohio passed a ballot measure last year to enshrine protections for abortion up to the point of viability in the state constitution, comfortably approving it with a clear majority of the vote.

“The people of Ohio think women should have the power to make their own health care decisions, Bernie Moreno thinks he should. As a man over the age of 50, I care deeply about a woman’s right to make health care decisions for herself — for my daughters, my granddaughters, and all Ohio women, regardless of their age,” Brown said. “Despite the majority of Ohioans agreeing, Moreno has made it clear he would overturn the will of Ohioans by passing a national abortion ban.”

Thus demonstrating that today’s Republicans are so self-serving that they cannot even imagine people caring for others. As Beau of the Fifth Column frequently says, Republicans don’t want to represent you, they want to rule over you. And some of them are so wrapped up in themselves that they forget to even pretend they care about what voters want (at least until the election is over).
Steve Shives has an excellent series of videos on YouTube called, “What if Republicans Said the Quiet Parts Out Loud”, where he pretends to be a GOP politician. Very funny, but also chillingly apt.

Obviously, everyone’s ideas about population ratios are all fake news.
The Ohio abortion vote PROVES that 57% of Ohio voters are women under 45. Obviously, males and older people abstained because it is not of interest or relevance to them.
So, shouldn’t it have been 100%?

Yes! Go on, Bernie Moreno! This is exactly the stuff you need to get elected! BTW try to get J D Vance to make an appearence at your campaign events, where the two of you can elaborate on your views at great length. Do not listen to the librul critics, the voters will love you.

I think it’s less that they’re actively trying to alienate women and more what moarscienceplz says above.

Really the problem goes back to Nixon’s time, but the rest of the foundation was laid when Reagan actively courted the Moral Majority voters. for decades Republicans have been claiming that they need to be elected so they could overturn Roe v Wade, Brown v Board of Education, and all sorts of other things… and then deliberately never going through with those changes except as performative attempts that would get shot down, because if those changes actually happened, it would be harder to rile up the single-issue voters to storm the polls and vote for them.

Then you got an entire generation of people who were pissed off at ‘their’ representatives failing to live up to their promises getting to be of age where they could run for office themselves, which gave us the Tea Party. The 9/11 attacks and then Obama getting into office absolutely threw these people into full meltdown tantrum mode. These people don’t know or care about the details and standards of what government does, they just see a chance to make sure nobody else tells them what to do ever again.

The old Republican party wanted to rule you, but they also wanted there to be a country to actually rule, so they were willing to play along. The new Republican party would rather burn it all to the ground than lose, in part because they can’t actually conceive of a world without all the background things that the government provides, so they only associate ‘government’ with bad things and completely disconnect it from the things that have always been there to help them.

In some ways the U.S. government, like many of the things supported by it (vaccine mandates, food safety inspections, safety regulations), has been a victim of its own successes, as laughable as that may seem at the moment. Things have been working well enough for so long that most people don’t remember a time before those things and have completely forgotten why some of them were necessary, and somehow assume that even if we take off all the guard rails, everything will be just fine. For them, at least. Because they’re smart, not like those other horrible people. Just ask them.
