I too, cold, repressed, emotionless person that I am, never add any emojis or symbols to my text or email messages, and have to refer to an emoji dictionary to figure out what other people are trying to say to me.
I used to put kisses on the end of my messages, but only to the person I wanted to be in a relationship with. I thought it might suggest an intimacy and affection for them that would eventually be reciprocated. After fifteen years of trying they severed all contact with me. I won’t be doing that again.

@ OP: me too. Not even to my wife, unless I’m concentrating. Certainly never to anyone else. A previous girlfriend said being with me was like dating Spock. She meant that in a good way. I think.
@cartomancer, 1: fuck ’em, they obviously weren’t the one for you. It took me a long time to realise I shouldn’t pretend to be something I’m not, mainly because I’m shit at it. Also, it took me too long to learn not to flog a dead horse. I can only offer sympathy and the suggestion that just saying what you mean does clearly work sometimes. Please accept my awkward repressed support.

Meh.
But I see some conflation, here.
There are symbolic letters, there are emoticons, and then there are emojis.
(Similar usage, but not the same thing at all)

PS I have been known to use nothing but an ellipsis or a smiley in reply to a message.
Point being, they communicate sentiment, not information.

I always put an XOXO at the end of my work e-mails because I don’t want to appear unprofessional.
