John @1: He was created by humans, so of course he is, at best, ineffectual. We also created science and technology, and where have they got us? Climate change, mass extinctions, and a grim future.

The folks on Easter Island were not bubbling with modern technology and they still managed to cut all the trees and tank their society. It’s not the science, it’s the culture of the humans.

REBECCA WIESS @3: Who said anything about modern technology? Yes, it’s human culture. And science is part of that. How do you divorce that from culture?

Without the technology of boats, they wouldn’t have made it to Easter Island.
That’s why we have to destroy all of our boats. And quit it with all the horse paste and whatnot. Just drink two (2) liters of giraffe goop per day and apply the micturated enzymes to your sinuses with a swab. Nobody who has done that has ever gotten sick from any COVID variant, unless they loved communism.

I’d check that Easter Island reference. It’s been the story for years but some recent historical/archeological work suggests it was mainland Chilean sheep farmers in the late 19th and early 20th C who may have caused much of the ecological damage. Results are probably still tentative but definitely suggestive.

Depopulation of Rapa Nui due to native deforestation seems to be a colonialistic myth.
