John Oliver calls for the abolition of the filibuster
He examines all the arguments traditionally given in favor of it and finds them unconvincing, and concludes that the benefits o getting rid of it outweigh the risks.
I can’t watch the video, but that’s okay because the biggest argument is that a lot of votes won’t count, as opposed the current situation where a lot of votes don’t count. “Candidates will only concentrate a handful of states”, which is a big change from the status quo where they only concentrate on a handful of states.

It is extremely annoying that if you search youtube for “john oliver”, pretty much all the hits being from the LastWeekTonight channel, from here in the UK some of them are viewable but most just say “This video is not available”. Well, I kind of expect that, though I don’t like it, obviously. But the annoying thing is *there is no way to tell which are which* without first clicking on the video. You just have to go through them one by one, hoping eventually one will work. Which it will. But there’s no indication whatsoever on the search results, as far as I can see, which are which.
Damn it. I know what a filibuster is. Why did I think this was about the electoral college?

It’s clear why McConnell and republicans actually do want to preserve the filibuster. Republican ideology is only about obstruction of doing useful things. Why democrats care is beyond me. I guess some of the corporatists secretly are sympathetic with all out republican obstruction but pretend otherwise now and then.

This isn’t about the electoral college. This is about the need for 60 votes to shut off debate/bring bills to a vote in the US Senate.
