It now turns out that the initial speculation that Donald Trump’s botched announcement of Indiana governor Mike Pence as his running was due to him not being sure he wanted him seems to be correct. Usually, such an announcement is made with great fanfare in the hope of gaining positive coverage for the ticket. But yesterday Trump made the choice on Twitter and Pence accepted the same way, a low-budget affair if there ever was one, just the kind of thing Trump hates.

If you recall the sequence of events, Trump said he would make the announcement on Friday at 11:00 am at a press conference, then reports leaked on Thursday that Pence was the choice, then Trump said on Thursday evening that he was postponing the announcement because of the Nice attack, and then on Friday sends out his Tweet a few minutes before the originally scheduled time of the announcement. The whole thing was a shambles.

The roll out of the running mate has been so last-minute that they did not have a full package extolling Pence’s biography and accomplishments ready to go. Meanwhile, the Trump-Pence campaign logo has already received widespread ridicule by those who spotted sexual symbolism in the way that the T penetrated the P.

Is this what the convention will also be like, with last minute changes and no one knowing exactly what is going to happen next? If so, Trump may still have fulfilled his promise that this year’s convention will not be boring like the previous ones, though perhaps not quite in the way he anticipated.
