John Oliver on the new climate change report

He suggests that talk shows should change their format so as to more accurately reflect the weight of scientific support on either side.

    I’ve really enjoyed the first few episodes of Last Week Tonight and it will be interesting to see how it develops in future.

    In his stint as stand-in host on The Daily Show Oliver had both the advantage of a well established structure and writing/producing team and the disadvantage of being compared to Jon Stewart in a role Stewart had made his own. The influence of The Daily Show on this new vehicle are obvious, but I think with a little time, and as Oliver gains confidence, we may see him develop his own style more (in terms of content and format, rather than presentational style).

    Is it just me or are some of the people that come out of Jon Stewards shows are even better and more intelligent than Steward himself? I mean, that’s a good thing.

    Creationists and others in the anti-science world love to talk about “equal time”. I agree: time equal to the proportion of evidence which supports your position. Would you give half of the time to geocentrism?

    @Alex,

    I think that his show is able to attract top talent and he is good enough and feels secure enough to have people around him who may be better than him. There is an old saying “First-rate people hire first-rate people. Second-rate people hire third-rate people” so that their own shortcomings won’t be shown up by comparison.
