Kuwait is usually held up as one of the moderate Arab states, not as extreme in pursuing rigid Islamic laws. But its parliament has just passed a law that makes blasphemy in the form of cursing god or Mohammed or even any of his wives an offense punishable with the death penalty. If the emir of Kuwait consents, which he has not done yet, it becomes law.
Right now there is a man on trial in Kuwait on charges that he insulted Mohammed. This happened before the new law was passed. If found guilty, his sentence would be 10 years under the old law but some are already calling for his death.
Once again, those who pander to religion succeed because those who oppose these ridiculous measures fear being tarred as being against religion. This mentality is what gives the extremists the upper hand.
If Muslims think about it, this shows that they worship a pretty puny god that needs human beings to respond in their slow way to insults against him. If he cares so much about being insulted, why not take care of it himself instantly?

Unfortunately, rhetorical questions like this have no positive effect on the most religious. You can expect some canned response about “test of faith” or “god’s plan.”

I’ve thought along those lines so many times that I’m getting close to needing supernumerary fingers and toes to count them -- and that’s counting in binary.
If I were a supreme being and my rabble behaved in such a way, I think I might reserve a few minutes every day for flinging small heavily barbed lightning bolts at the self-important twits who think I can’t look out for myself (but then I stop to think: well, 5 minutes a day would mean I’d misuse the time I normally spend to kill nearly 10 little African kids with malaria).

I suspect this is a matter of “piousness”. Not long ago I saw some sort of declaration of equality of all humans, in which it was stated that all were equal, except that the pious were more equal. Standing up for Mo earns you a better class of virgin in heaven. Not sure how that helps pious women.

After the first occupation of Iraq in 1991, Saddam’s forces were thrown out of Kuwait. Human rights groups asked that the country be allowed to have elections, and reportedly the public in Kuwait wanted elections. Instead, Bush 1 reinstalled the pro-US dictatorship which had a track record of human rights abuses.
The Kuwaiti regime is “moderate”? Only in the mind of John Bolton and other such fascists.
