Reason Rally to be a ‘Woodstock for atheists’

I will be attending part of the Reason Rally on the National Mall in Washington DC tomorrow and so blogging will be light over the weekend. The national media have started covering the event. (See here and here and here.)

This NPR report features fellow FreethoughtBlogs blogger Greta Christina and also David Silverman of American Atheists who thinks that within a couple of decades secularism will be the norm even in the currently god-infested USA.

I agree with him that the collapse of religion is far more imminent than most people think and wrote a series of posts titled The End of God where I marshaled the evidence in support of this thesis.

    By comparing with Woodstock you mean that the main goal of the Reason Rally organizers is to make money? Like it was in 1969?

    The NPR reporter Barbara Hagerty used the term “Woodstock for atheists”, no telling where she got it:

    Thousands of people are expect to descend on the Mall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to celebrate not believing in God. It’s being called a sort of “Woodstock for Atheists,” a chance for atheists to show their power in numbers and change their image.

    The “Reason Rally” could attract up to 30,000 people; organizer David Silverman says it marks a coming-of-age for nonbelievers.

    “We’ll look back at the Reason Rally as one of the game-changing events when people started to look at atheism and look at atheists in a different light,” Silverman says.

    Was it supposed to be a dirty-hippies dogwhistle?
