The Australian comedy show The Chaser’s War on Everything finds American beliefs in literal interpretations of the Bible to be an inexhaustible source of humor.
I don’t comment very often but I wanted you to know Mano how much I appreciate your blog. I like your thoughtful way of looking at things and pointing out what is wrong. I love PZ too but sometimes the constant combativeness just gets exhausting. Your change of pace is always welcome.

I can remember learning a song in Sunday school that had the line ‘read the Bible’ in it. It seems a little odd to me that so many believers don’t manage to wade through the whole thing at least once. I would have thought that every church community would consider reading the entire Bible a bit like a pilgrimage that everyone would have to do at least once in their lifetime. I suppose there is a problem with it being really thick and most of it being utterly boring. The other problem is of course that reading the whole thing tends to lead to atheism. Now that is odd, reading the word of God in its entirety leads people to thinking God doesn’t exist. It seems that God should have employed a ghost writer, Dan Brown maybe.

It is funny, and it’d be great to see more folks doing it, and posting videos of the results.
However, you really should have mentioned that it’s from 2009 (it aired on July 29, 2009) — the way the post is currently written it sounds like the clip came out recently, which isn’t particularly true.

This was amusing, and I understand exactly why they’re doing this, but “do you believe the bible is true?” isn’t the right question in this context. They should either ask “do you believe the bible tells us how to live our lives?” and then proceed as they did, or they should ask whether it is true and then mention one of its factual claims (e.g. rabbits chew cud, earth has four corners, etc). It doesn’t make sense to talk about whether an imperative statement is “true”.

Heee. That got a little too funny at times.
A friend of mine showed me this video recently and I had to share it, too. “Jane doesn’t do well at the Christian Discussion group”. It gets a little racy when she expresses her opinion on Thor, god of thunder, but otherwise I just laughed and laughed.
I’m really grateful the internet provides us so much humor that’s irreverent to religion. You know? It breaks the armor of ‘reverence’.
Though I can’t help but notice that almost all of these videos are NOT American.
