As someone who spent many hours reading Richard Scarry books to the kids, this resonates.

I appreciate the local atmosphere, with all the snow and ice on the ground. It’s snowing right now, as a matter of fact.

    I see the ones in the detention center are being marked as MS13 members. The number of real criminals being detained by ICE is never mentioned, they just label all detainees as rapist, murderers, and gang members. n

The whole “modern” White Christian Nationalist/Evangelical/MAGA movement dates right back to when the Supreme Court ordered the desegregation of public schools, then the desegregation of public faciilties, and then the desegregation of church schools who received Federal money. Preachers and politicians tapped into the “White resentment” that was palpable in the South when I was a kid in the 50s/60s.

    It’s disheartening.

    I haven’t searched out a youtube link for this, but heard on the news Kristi Noem justifying the Minnesota raids and demands for papers and whatnot as quite legal and proper, and then literally describing the persons so approached, as “criminals.” Of course one can presume it’s a slip of the tongue or the whistle, and Noem is notoriously sloppy in thought and speech, but still, according to her official word, we’re all criminals by default.

    I’m a resident of the Twin Cities and the civil rights violations of Gravel-pit Barbie’s gang of maga thugs are being well documented. The flip side of Minnesota Nice is MN passive- aggressive.

    MN has had very mild winter temperatures in the last few weeks (by our standards), with daily highs right around 30 degrees / just below freezing. That ended today, and we are going sub-zero with single digit highs and nuisance snow. Water is now a weapon against ICE. Protesters are simply pouring water on the ground, and I’m sure that some agents are going to learn just how quickly frostbite happens when you get wet.

    There are reports of ICE-holes stealing cellphones of the protesters that they detain.

    So: if you’re going to a protest:
    1. Get a burner phone.
    2. Put the burner phone # on your regular phone, but leave your regular phone at home. Make sure no-one else has your burner phone #.
    3. Program the ring-tone of the burner phone to be maximum volume gunshot sounds.

    If ICE steals your burner phone, when you get released have all your friends call the burner phone.

    Hilarity ensues? One can but hope.

    Hard disagree. Modern cellular phones are all-purpose tracking devices. You don’t bring a tracking device with you unless you want law enforcement to follow you around.

    If you’re going to a protest:
    1.) Don’t bring a phone.
    2.) Bring a video recording device that isn’t hooked up to the POTS.
    3.) Work out a protocol of low-tech communcation with friends and family ahead of time. Give explicit instructions for what they should do and where they should be if they don’t hear back from you for a specified period of time.

    beholder is completely right, do not bring a phone with a SIM card under your name to a protest, burner or otherwise. Record with a phone without a SIM, that way they can’t tell your location later to lob any accusations at you. Any hacker will tell you that. Some have, on socmed.

    Stevo, you betray your indifference to Trump’s authoritarian and vindictive tendencies when you say things like that. You might as well have said, “It can’t be that bad!”. Several agencies will vacuum up all that data for later, and yes, it will be sufficient to correllate to each individual with a working cell phone at a protest, where they live, where they sleep, where they spend most of their time, their contacts, and all the little resistance hideouts they assumed were hidden from prying eyes, but that they’re sharing with law enforcement because they brought a cell phone with them. How all that metadata can be used evolves with new technologies. Ask IDF and Mossad how valuable cell phone location data is for determining which house has a large family in it for the purposes of a missile strike. Metadata kills.

    It’s worse than that, actually. I said law enforcement would follow you around, but this location data is sold on the open market. Any stalker or domestic abuser with some cash and the know-how can access this location data and correlate it to an individual. You are broadcasting that information to the world indiscriminately when you have your cell phone with you, burner or otherwise.

    People with cell phones recording the authorities, live, is how we’re getting information about what’s going on. It’s what stops ICE and police from doing even worse than they’re already doing; they know that even if they seize the devices, it’s been uploaded to the cloud already.

    The advice to not bring a cell phone is ludicrous. That’s like riding to war without your plate armour.

    Are people aware that they they should put the heaters in their on recirculation when ICE is present. This will protect against ICE spraying pepper spray int the cars ventilation system. Keep a scraper close to hand to clear the inside of the windshield if you have to stay on recirc for an extended period of time.

    A US federal judge has issued an order limiting the crowd control tactics that can be used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) towards “peaceful and unobstructive” protesters in Minneapolis.

    Judge Katherine Menendez ruled on Friday night that federal agents can’t arrest or pepper spray peaceful demonstrators, including those monitoring and observing ICE agents.

    The ruling comes ahead of planned weekend protests against the widespread immigration action in the city and follows the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent earlier this month.

    The US Department of Homeland Security said it is taking measures to protect officers from rioters.

    On Friday, Minnesota officials urged protesters expected to take to the streets this weekend to stay orderly and peaceful.

    Yes, people are aware that they should close their vents when ICE attempts to gas them for the crime of driving in their own neighborhood, but maintaining presence of mind when surrounded by heavily armed masked men screaming threats at you is not easy.

    I can’t believe I have had to write that, here in America.

    As to scrapers, those are standard equipment in Minnesota, along with serious cold weather gear. None of that faffing about with a little piece of plastic. My favorite is a combo scraper and broom with a telescoping handle to pull the snow off while your vehicle warms up.

    Depending on how short the scraper telescopes to, a small scraper for interior use might be a good Idea if you are going to stay on recirc for a long time as well as for when your car ingests a bunch of snow thrown up by another vehicle. Switch to recirc at the site of ICE or when you see a skunk on the shoulder of the road (I learned the hard way). I am not intending to insult skunks by comparing them to ICE.

    Defrost works fine on recirculate, the only time you get frost forming on the interior of the windshield is if it is cold and you have no heat. Snow is nothing to us.
    We generally have snow cover for at least 5 months of the year.
