I didn’t get shot

It was a bad day for a protest: -10°C (what is that in F? about 15,16°), 40km/hr winds, blowing snow, near blizzard conditions, roads slick and icy, yet there they were, a dozen brave individuals standing out there in Cyrus, Minnesota, getting frostbit to protest the criminal regime of corrupt murderers and liars in this country.

Yikes, but it was cold.

We had a few assholes in pickup trucks drive by and make rude gestures, and a few people just stared stonily straight ahead to avoid acknowledging us, but the majority of the passers-by would wave or honk their horns for the cause.

And then I had to drive home and struggle to keep in my lane while the wind tried to push me into a ditch. Worth it, though.

Kudos for making the effort in a ‘wintry’ winter day.
    .
BTW, J.D. Vance may inadvertedly have helped the prosecution!

A smart villain would have consulted lawyers about what to say. Dumb villains are too arrogant.
Next up: “Mr. Bond, this is my plan to destroy the world. Since you cannot get away, I will show you the way to stop me.”

Since the other ICE/DHS a-holes are covering up for Ross, they should be arrested and charged as accessories to murder.

It would be a terrible shame if they were “shot while trying to escape” also, too.

  3. Rob Grigjanis says

Sadly, there is, and has been for years, a sizeable percentage of Americans who simply want those they perceive as ‘liberals’ to be executed. No justification necessary.

  4. Tethys says

The murderer is a local sadly. He will be prosecuted, just like the POS who murdered George Floyd.

Good on you PZ for protesting despite that vicious cold wind. The rain yesterday was also very unpleasant, but solidarity is more important. We aren’t snowflakes, we are glaciers, and we are going to remake the landscape.

You may enjoy this eloquent video from a fellow local protestor. I also posted in on the Renee thread.

Glad the protest went off ok despite the weather.

Maybe driving two hours each way to go to the protest tomorrow isn’t such a good idea unless the weather really improves?

  6. says

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion. Driving 15 minutes was surprisingly scary today, I don’t think I’ll risk the roads tomorrow. Not getting shot but wiping out on the road is not a good exchange.

@6 I’m less optimistic. Though I hope the public outrage is enough to turn the tide against this administration.

I met a lone protestor and kept them company at a street corner.

The minute it was scheduled to start, as I waited to approach from across the intersection, some yahoos stopped their giant pickup in the crosswalk, hooting Trump’s name and queerphobic slurs. They were so desperate to perform, they harassed a random pedestrian for all they knew. Or maybe they were targeting the guy with the sign, and I was a casualty of their general disregard for crosswalks. I couldn’t see faces cuz their door was at eye level.

Thank you PZ for the ICE Out for Good link, it made my Saturday a little better.

I kinda like Jesse Ventura’s anger here. The incident could have been personal to him more if he wasn’t so so oddly aloof. But we need more angry Jesse Ventura. I could see him side by side with PZ without championing another governor run. Both PZ and Ventura are pissed. It would be cool to see Jesse put the body more into the fray, but it was his high school and at the end of the day he’s as pissed as we are. I hope Jesse has time to bleed:

And I commend him for calling it out as he did with Kaepernick with respect.

Ventura: Has she ever met a person of color? Do they have any in South Dakota?

Wikipedia – Demographics of South Dakota

In 2012, the Census Bureau estimated that
86.2% of South Dakotans were White,
8.9% were American Indian or Alaskan Native,
    3.1% were Hispanic or Latino,
1.7% were Black or African American,
    1.1% were Asian, and
0.1% were Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian.
    […]
American Indians, largely Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota (Sioux) are predominant in several counties. South Dakota has the third highest proportion of Native Americans of any state, behind Alaska and New Mexico. Five of the state’s counties lie entirely within Indian reservations.

HuffPo – Gov. Kristi Noem [in 2024 was] banished by every single South Dakota Tribe

banned from 20% of her state’s land. […] Tribes began banishing Noem in February after she made comments saying Mexican drug cartels were infiltrating South Dakota’s reservations. […] accusing Noem of using “Indian people and reservations … as a basis to create a bogus border crisis” and curry favor with Trump.
    […]
But Noem only doubled down on her remarks. “We’ve got some tribal leaders that I believe are personally benefiting from the cartels being there, and that’s why they attack me every day,” she said at a forum in March.

    * At least one ban was lifted as she neared DHS confirmation last year.

There are reports circulating about a Customs & Border Patrol practice that was reported about 10 years ago. Agents would step in front of vehicles to justify shooting at the passengers. It is reported that Ross was a CBP agent from 2007 to 2015. This is from the American Immigration Council from 2014 about the issue: New Directive Clarifies Existing Use of Force Policy at CBP. And this is from NPR, also from 2014: Border Patrol To Limit Use Of Deadly Force Against Rock Throwers.

    Respect & stay safe.

Although its hard to know how to stay safe given what the ICE Gestapo thugs and Trumpist Fascists (but I repeat myself) will do to almost anyone for any reason gien they feel confident they’ll get away with it and be defended & blatant lies told and believed in their favour by the eviliest of scum that are now in charge.

  14. seversky says

Good for you. It looks miserable but worthwhile.

I’m disappointed the Minnesota BCA meekly decided they couldn’t pursue an investigation because the FBI was refusing to share information. Since then, Minnesota AG Keith Ellison and another prosecutor have said there is nothing to prevent an independent state investigation and subpoenas can be issued to compel the release of evidence if necessary. The Feds, of course, want it to be a Federal case rather than state because Trump has pardon powers over the former but not the latter.

Personally, I would refuse to share anything with Patel’s FBI as they are no longer reliable.

There was a report of ICE clearing possessions out of Ross’s house and that he and his family have gone into hiding. If Ross is charged, couldn’t ICE then be charged with being accessories after the fact?

  15. raven says

This is what I wrote on the previous thread.
They really need to investigate and charge Ross for murder, which it clearly was.

Even if it never comes to trial because the Feds shoot the Hennepin DA, which these days is always possible, it will still save a few lives as a deterrrent.
ICE thugs are going to think twice before killing if it means they will end up with 20 years in prison for murder.

It’s reported that Ross is already in hiding.
    Good,
This will follow him around for the rest of his life.
He will be a hero to some of the MAGA, and a killer to everyone else.

One of the local authorities has something to say about Ross.

The Hennepin County DA’s Office says they have jurisdiction to prosecute the ICE agent involved in the murder of Renee Good.

Murder is a state crime, so no federal pardon will help.

    This was clearly a murder.

Investigate, send it to a grand jury, arrest this killer, and put him on trial.
That is far more Due Process than his victim got.

Guy is an idiot and a coward.
He shot an unarmed, unresisting 37 year old woman at point blank range.

No snow here in Cheyenne, WY, but the wind was howling! I really wished I’d worn my down coat! There was one guy with a unicycle who kept pedaling down the street from west to east (while holding a sign-he juggles at some of the protests, too–a true talent!) and then walking back. He said he couldn’t keep his balance going the other way.

  17. raven says

The Trump regime is already retaliating against Minnesota.

For caring about the fact that an ICE thug killed a 37 year old mom.
They are going to withhold Food Stamps from the poor people of Minnesota.

Independent: USDA suspends ‘federal financial awards’ for Minnesota, citing ‘massive fraud’
The USDA is suspending more than $120 million in federal funding to Minnesota effective immediately

Katie Hawkinson in Washington, D.C. Friday 09 January 2026 23:28 EST

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has announced that her agency is “suspending federal financial awards” to Minnesota and Minneapolis, citing evidence of “fraud” found by the Trump administration.

Rollins published a letter on Friday addressed to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, announcing the suspension of “all active awards and any future awards from USDA to the State of Minnesota and the City of Minneapolis, currently totaling over $129.18 million.” Rollins said the suspension will last “until sufficient proof has been provided that the fraud has stopped.”
    and
The Trump administration also paused federal funding for child care subsidies and other social services in five Democratic-led states, including Minnesota, earlier this week. The states sued, and a federal judge temporarily blocked the order on Friday, which will allow funds to continue flowing as the legal battle plays out.

There is so much wrong with this that it is hard to list them all.

.1. The Federal government doesn’t have any such evidence of widespread fraud in Minnesota.
They are lying here as usual.
A lot of those allegations come from random internet trolls that just make them up, i.e. N. Shirley.

.2. There were fraud incidents in all states during the Covid-19 pandemic. Quite a few in Florida and Texas among all the states.

.3. Minnesota has been investigating since 2022 and has already a lot of convictions.

.4. This is almost certainly illegal.
The Federal government doesn’t have the legal power to withhold funds allocated by congress.
A judge has already ruled against them on a similar attack against the Blue states.
