Awesome for Skatje and for Mary and you as proud parents but you will not die off and abandon this blog. We will not stand for that. Bounty hunters will be sent to all the imagined afterworlds and find you for reanimation processes that are not pleasant.
I note the cognitive science after the computer science. That’s interesting. Isn’t Mary a psychologist?

@5: My main department is CS, but CU offers a dual PhD in cog sci if you take a bunch of extra classes and do multi-disciplinary research related to cognitive science (which they consider that I do, since my area of NLP is CS + linguistics)

That’s awesome! I just recall decades ago on usenet your dad saying stuff about my then interest in Piaget and maybe if memory serves that your mom was into psych stuff. At the time my interest was in Piaget’s views on the Baldwin effect and genetic assimilation which PZ may have dealt with at the time.
The relation of computer science and cognitive science is important and definitely your wheelhouse far more than mine. Cool to see you adding input here and congrats on the advancement in your studies.

If you want to lie down and let it all drift away, do not do what I did. I promised my late wife that I would do my best to stick around long enough for the grandchildren to become adults. Since the youngest is now about 2.5, I figure I’ve got 19 years to go. So in mid-2042, I can give it all up. After that it might get….interesting…if her beliefs are correct, I will tear the afterlife apart seeking her. If mine are correct, all that is left are her written works and the memories of the living.

Warmest congratulations to Skatje and your whole family.
Professor Myers, please administer the final doctoral oral exam question:
“Doctor, it hurts when I do this …”

If you can’t give the countersign for that prompt, you don’t deserve the doctorate.

With that and $3 you can buy a coffee at Starbucks.
I don’t drink coffee, and I don’t think I have ever been in a Starbucks, but I didn’t think even a small coffee (not sure of their terminology for that) could be had for $3.
Congratulations to Skatje and the entire Myers family. The accomplishments of all of you are important to all of us. And, no, PZ, you now must gather the strength to create the ‘Arachnid Silk and Fang Force 9’ to bring the ‘spider apocalypse’ down on the heads of the rtwingnut xtian terrorist hordes that threaten us. (we are helping already in our own limited ways)

I reply: If Skatje is now a double doctor, does that double her ability to accomplish great things? Or does it double her workload? Or does it cause cognitive dissonance in some way? Whoa, all this is giving me double vision. I’ll sit down now and shut up.

It’s fun to be brutally pessimistic. I also think it’s fun to look stuff up because we are all standing on the shoulders of giants. The average cost of a venti (590ml, or about three mugsfull) of coffee at Starbucks in Los Angeles is 2.45 USD. I found some specific places in Colorado and it looks like it costs .25 USD more to haul a ventis-worth of beans up the mountain from the port.
