Welp, guess I’m all done now

The last kid is done, now all my children are finished.

I think that means I can lie down and die now, all tasks completed.

Ah, wait. What about those grandchildren? Neither have even a Master’s!

Besides Skatje probably needs help in draughting grant proposals.

Congratulations to Skatje. And to her parents.

  2. hemidactylus says

Awesome for Skatje and for Mary and you as proud parents but you will not die off and abandon this blog. We will not stand for that. Bounty hunters will be sent to all the imagined afterworlds and find you for reanimation processes that are not pleasant.

I note the cognitive science after the computer science. That’s interesting. Isn’t Mary a psychologist?

  3. Skatje Myers says

@5: My main department is CS, but CU offers a dual PhD in cog sci if you take a bunch of extra classes and do multi-disciplinary research related to cognitive science (which they consider that I do, since my area of NLP is CS + linguistics)

  4. azpaul3 says

Congratulations to Skatje! But, you aren’t done yet. There are papers to feed and spiders to grade. No, Doctor, the requirements go on.

  5. mathman85 says

Congratulations to the newest Dr. Myers! And now I wish my university had listed the subject area on my diploma.

  6. hemidactylus says

    @6- Skatje Myers
That’s awesome! I just recall decades ago on usenet your dad saying stuff about my then interest in Piaget and maybe if memory serves that your mom was into psych stuff. At the time my interest was in Piaget’s views on the Baldwin effect and genetic assimilation which PZ may have dealt with at the time.

The relation of computer science and cognitive science is important and definitely your wheelhouse far more than mine. Cool to see you adding input here and congrats on the advancement in your studies.

If you want to lie down and let it all drift away, do not do what I did. I promised my late wife that I would do my best to stick around long enough for the grandchildren to become adults. Since the youngest is now about 2.5, I figure I’ve got 19 years to go. So in mid-2042, I can give it all up. After that it might get….interesting…if her beliefs are correct, I will tear the afterlife apart seeking her. If mine are correct, all that is left are her written works and the memories of the living.

  8. Dr. Pablito says

Warmest congratulations to Skatje and your whole family.

Professor Myers, please administer the final doctoral oral exam question:
“Doctor, it hurts when I do this …”

If you can’t give the countersign for that prompt, you don’t deserve the doctorate.

  9. birgerjohansson says

    Congratulations, Skatje.

And if you have time, please make a summer journey to Scandinavia or western Europe to get some blissful relief from the MAGA/Creationist/ “ignorace-is-strength” background noise. Imagine going weeks without hearing Trump mentioned.

  10. iiandyiiii says

    Congrats!

But there’s still at least one task left — got to read my political satire novel, CULTURAL PRACTICES OF THE HEARTLAND, that I sent to you a couple of months ago!

  11. birgerjohansson says

And now Skatje will have time to read humor designed for nerds like us- Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal and XKCD.
And dad’s science fiction collection, which I trust is extensive.

  12. Larry says

Wait. UoC does more than just give Dion Sanders a megaphone with which to broadcast his greatness? Congratulations, none-the-less, Dr Myers

  13. badland says

@whheydt your love for your wife is so clear every time you mention her. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

    @skatje – congratulations! That’s a degree I’ll never have

  14. Reginald Selkirk says

with all the rights and privileges thereunto appertaining

With that and $3 you can buy a coffee at Starbucks.

  15. johnson catman says

    Congratulations, Skatje.

    re Reginald Selkirk @23:

With that and $3 you can buy a coffee at Starbucks.

I don’t drink coffee, and I don’t think I have ever been in a Starbucks, but I didn’t think even a small coffee (not sure of their terminology for that) could be had for $3.

  16. says

Congratulations to Skatje and the entire Myers family. The accomplishments of all of you are important to all of us. And, no, PZ, you now must gather the strength to create the ‘Arachnid Silk and Fang Force 9’ to bring the ‘spider apocalypse’ down on the heads of the rtwingnut xtian terrorist hordes that threaten us. (we are helping already in our own limited ways)
Skatje said: CU offers a dual PhD.
I reply: If Skatje is now a double doctor, does that double her ability to accomplish great things? Or does it double her workload? Or does it cause cognitive dissonance in some way? Whoa, all this is giving me double vision. I’ll sit down now and shut up.

  17. dstatton says

Hey great! A very good friend of mine teaches Latin literature at CU. I’ll be going out there Veterans Day weekend.

  18. seachange says

Congratulations to all y’all the Doctors Myers!

It’s fun to be brutally pessimistic. I also think it’s fun to look stuff up because we are all standing on the shoulders of giants. The average cost of a venti (590ml, or about three mugsfull) of coffee at Starbucks in Los Angeles is 2.45 USD. I found some specific places in Colorado and it looks like it costs .25 USD more to haul a ventis-worth of beans up the mountain from the port.

  19. johnson catman says

re seachange @27: I shoulda looked it up. I was going by what some of my coworkers say that they pay for Starbucks coffee. I guess they are getting something jazzed up rather than a plain coffee.

  20. birgerjohansson says

Now that PZ has successfully raised a new generation, he can go transhumanist, inject bowhead whale DNA and live for two centuries.
    Unless he chooses “uploading”.

  21. says

Yeah, sure, that diploma and several dollars will get you a cup of coffee…but also a good job at a prestigious university that will pay for an awful lot of coffee. Which she has also done.

  22. Robert Webster says

Congratulations, Skatje Myers! You did far better than I did; I didn’t even finish my BS. They decided that twelve years of American History wasn’t enough, I had to take another. And, I got stubborn. However, I just retired after 50 years of programming, so I did OK. Are you planning on professoring?

  23. birgerjohansson says

For Ukko’s sake, if you pick a career in academia, do not pick a university in (coughfailed statescough) but in Canada or Europe. Some local universities might force you to work even with an outbreak of Yersina Pestis on the grounds.

    I wish this was a joke…
