A level-headed look at CHAZ

I’ve seen the hack job Tucker Carlson did on CHAZ (some of it is imbedded in this one), so it’s good to see some honest evaluation of the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.

Warning: it’s by a lefty YouTuber, Thought Slime, who I’ve long thought was a pretty good one. That means I can expect he’ll announce that he’s got a book deal with Jordan Peterson, or that he’s a headliner at CPAC, because that’s how the past decade has trained me to think of people I like.

Spiders, at least, haven’t let me down yet.

Once they get popular, though…

I’ve watched Thought Slime for a while now, and he seems to be a good egg.

He did do a video on Peterson actually – basically on how he lied his way to fame.

If CHAZ were as horrific and terrifying as the media claims, most everyone would just leave. It’s not like they’re being held prisoner. I’ve heard (though can’t verify, so if anyone has actual news on that, I’d be grateful) that a lot or most of the people of color have left because of the same old bullshit. I hope it’s not true, but it sounds like it could be.

Notice just how many statements and assumptions are made and then had to be rescinded, deleted, or walked back. The point is not that the makers of these statements or assumptions care one whit about the truth. They want the narrative out there more than anything else. The corrections can be ignored by the racists who want to hate BLM and black people, and only exist so the liars who spread these lies (Fox News, the police, etc.) can later claim they do care about the truth, that’s why they issued a correction day(s) later.

This is bullshit, in its purest philosophical sense of the term. That’s what the right-wing has mastered since the 1980s. They are the bullshit party.

I hope the video being set to private isn’t a bad sign. Hopefully he’s just making some editing changes, and not having to scrap it entirely.

@Ridana: I just walked through the CHOP (formerly the CHAZ, though I prefer the term “Free Capitol Hill”). It has gotten whiter since its first week, but it’s hard for me to say if it’s a slow leak or a mass exodus. The weekend may be more indicative, since I imagine a lot of people still gotta work.

Jordan Peterson’s 15 minutes are pretty much up.

    They are totally up.

Jordan Peterson suffers year of ‘absolute hell’ and needs …www.independent.co.uk › News › World › Europe

Feb 8, 2020 – Jordan Peterson has been forced to pursue “emergency” drug detox treatment in Russia after getting hooked on highly addictive psychoactive benzodiazepines …

Peterson got addicted to benzodiazepines and was unable to kick his habit.
He ended up in a medically induced coma in Russia that came close to killing him.

    That vaporized his credibility.
They guy who claims to tell you how to run your life can’t even run his own life.

Thought Slime’s twitter explains the brief takedown and repost.

Good video, helps to explain some of what’s actually happening there and before the white supremacists and police (and white supremacist police) inevitably destroy it.

    Matt Thoughtslime is good people.
This is a very good video, but the, so are most of his…I sympathize with PZ’s mock-cynicism, plenty of folks I had taken for allies/comrades have turned out…not good or at least massively disappointing. However, no red flags so far from Matt.

It’s entirely possible he’ll do something bad/wrong/stupid at some point. People do that.

His work is good and makes the world a better place, and he’s demonstrated a clear willingness to self-correct, and own mistakes, which is nice to see.

I’ve followed Thoughtslime for a while now, and I don’t see him strolling down the easy path paved with clicks and ad revenue any time soon. They & other Canadian Tubers are fast becoming my favourites: people like TMM, ShannonQ, Paulogia, Viced Rhino are a refreshing antidote to the yawping rational regressives of yesteryear (the sort eagerly courted by Mythicist Milwaukee).

While I admire the idea behind it, I have come to the conclusion that areas like CHAZ should not be encouraged by the left.

What brought me to that conclusion was reading an article about the boogaloo types who are prepping for war after a Biden victory. I doubt that there are more than a thousand or so “if not ballots then bullets” types spread out nationwide, and the majority of those are probably all talk and no action, but if Trump encourages them and has to be dragged out of the oval office, I worry that there will still be enough that we’ll see a half dozen or so Ruby Ridges and Bundy Compounds spring up in various backwaters (or maybe national parks). In a lot of places, too, the local constabulary and even the national guard might support them, especially if they’re feeling ill-used and cranky. The last thing we need is for them to be able to claim places like CHAZ as precedent and accuse us of hypocrisy for opposing their new “autonomous zones.”
