Is it allowed for an atheist to look forward to American Gods?

Doesn’t matter, you’re not the boss of me. Ian McShane makes for a good Wednesday, I’ll say that.

Gaiman is participating in the production, including chapters originally cut from the manuscript for pacing issues. Transcribing it into a TV series opens the opportunity for including the cut scenes to expand the background behind many of the passing references in the novel.
I’m claiming to suffer enjoyably from Gaimania, as a big fan of Gaiman. excuse my enthusiasm. This looks like a very accurate visual presentation of the concepts presented textually.
    Shadow Moon rules.

Huh. One of the cut scenes restored in the anniversary edition was one where Shadow meets Jesus. Or to be pedantically precise, a Jesus; gods having multiple instantiations.

I wonder if the television series will include that one.

Another Gaiman fan here — not going to miss this one. So glad we’re beyond the era of network television here in the US. Imagine if NBC or CBS had gotten their mitts on it…

Man, Ian McShane. He got started on the BBC a whopping 55 years ago, and has been a fixture there ever since. I was barely out of nappies (diapers) when he was Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and I was barely out of university when he scored his biggest UK hit as Lovejoy, the lovable rogue and antiques dealer. He looked world-worn even back then.

Suddenly I’m wondering how well Christina Ricci would do in the role…

(Can Gods in the AG universe take on any form they want, or would they be constrained by form their followers imagine them to be?)

The gods in the AG universe come into being in the way their believers imagine them. That is their constraint. This is why Mad Sweeney is tall despite our current view of leprechauns and why Mr. Ibis and Mr. Jacquel are being played by actors of (recent) African descent instead of ones of Middle Eastern descent (this was actually a point made in the novel when Shadow meets them and asks why they don’t appear Middle Eastern…). This looks so good, I cannot wait for it to come out.

Love the book. Not quite so sure about the series, though…I rarely get around to watching the teevee, and I’m not even sure I could figure out to get this starz channel thing.

There’s also an awful lot of blood being thrown around in that trailer. I don’t remember gory dismemberments being a big part of the book. That could be a bad sign.

brucegee1962@10: When I first heard this was coming out I went back and re-read the book (I last read it in 2001) and wow was it a lot more violent that I remembered. Like, a lot more violent.
Now I need to go read Anasi boys and try to figure out who’s Starz account I can mooch off of.

While I was reading the book many years ago, I continuously had these vivid images in my head — as if I was watching a movie instead of reading a novel. When I stop to think about it, I realised just how visually powerful Gaiman’s scenes were: the details, the dialog, the… cinematography of it all. I’ve never got this feeling from any other other novel.

Of course I thought that a faithful transposition into movie form would necessarily be impossible, because the book contains so much and a movie can only be so long.

On the other hand, perhaps a TV series could handle the pacing correctly… And with Gaiman’s quality-controlling the thing, and the trailers looking so promising…

Gods, I really hope this lives up to my enormous expectations.
