    I haven’t had a taco in a long time.
After they take over the USoA, do you think they’ll come to Canada?

  2. oualawouzou says

Good Lord, chigau… now I have mental pictures of tacos stuffed with fries, cheese curds and brown sauce.

  3. magistramarla says

I live in a city in which there already are taco trucks or taco restaurants on every corner. This city has an Hispanic majority.
The tacos and the Latinos are the best things about living here. The good-ole-boy network of old white men who are clinging to power by their fingernails (think Abbott, Cruz, etc.) are the worst things about the entire state.

  4. magistramarla says

Oh, and now I’m thinking about filling a flour tortilla with poutine. I agree with chigau – it sounds fabulous.

  5. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

Don’t appear to have food trucks in my area of Chiwaukee, but there are at least a dozen small taquerias within five miles of home.

  6. Moggie says

Latinos for Trump? Latinos… for Trump. Latinos FOR Trump! Move over, turkeys for Christmas, you’ve been supplanted!

  7. Onamission5 says

“Vote Trump he will take your tacos away” is not a very good campaign slogan.

There’s currently three different places for me to get tacos between my house and my kids’ school– and that’s if I don’t go even a little bit out of my way. If I’m willing to slightly diverge, there’s at least seven.

Dude has seriously underestimated our love affair with crunchy/steamy cheap and portable foods, is what I’m saying. More tacos shops and trucks than there is BBQ, and this is Carolina.

  8. Larry says

Latinos for Trump? Latinos… for Trump. Latinos FOR Trump!

Why, that’s as ridiculous and unpossible as gay Republican organizations!

    What? There are?

  9. John Harshman says

Hillary needs to immediately schedule a photo op at a taco truck. Excuse me now, I need to go find a carnitas burrito.

  10. wzrd1 says

I’m looking out of my livingroom window and am noting with great interest the T intersection at the end of my driveway.
Step right out the door, a short walk down the driveway, get a taco.

Hopefully, with a side of Spanish rice and refried beans. :)

  11. rq says

As awesome as it sounds, I would be sad to see the Great Taco Truck Migration from Your Streetcorner to the Great White North of Canada.
I’ll take that poutine taco with a double-double, please.

  12. Athywren - not the moon you're looking for says

Mmmm, tacos. What a lovely idea.
(I like the thought of poutacos too!)

  13. Brother Ogvorbis, Fully Defenestrated Emperor of Steam, Fire and Absurdity says

We have four food vendors on site this weekend for a big todo at our park. One ice cream vendor (local dairy farm/dairy bar), one potato pancake place, one halushki and perogi place, and one southwestern truck. And I’ll bet dollars to donuts that the taco truck runs out of food first.

  14. Larry says

You Canucks start eating them poutine tacos, you can’t stop and pretty soon you’re going to be as big and fat as us Americans. With all the heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure issues that go along. Stick with moose tacos. I hear the meat is pretty lean.

  15. shikko says

    @2, 3, 5, 10, 15:

If we really wanted to Canadianize it, how making a taco out of bannock? That could work.

Go regional: QC/ON has poutine and/or Montreal smoked meat; battered cod for the Maritimes, moose/elk for the north; bison for the prairies; smoked salmon for BC; all folded lovingly into a piece of bannock with appropriate sauce. You could use beaver tails instead to make a dessert taco.

    ‘scuse me, gotta go shopping.

  16. whheydt says

Being a bit cautious, and concerned that the polls are showing a far closer race than is reasonable, all things considered, I will wait until Wed. 11/9 to celebrate the election by having tacos.

  17. brucej says

The polls are showing a closer race because the media is putting their thumbs, feet, lunchboxes, cartoon 1000 pound weights on the coverage of Hillary. All that sweet sweet political ad moolah won’t flow if there isn’t a horse race, even if they have to keep tying extra weights onto one horse.

But seriously, if HRC doesn’t put up a picture of her holding up a taco in front of a taco truck with the slogan “Tacos today! Tacos Tomorrow! Tacos forever!” I”ll be sorely dissapointed.

Mmm…mouth watering for a good fish or bulgogi taco mmmmm Korean-Mex!

  18. cubist says

Taco trucks on every corner, if Trump loses? Yes—and there might even be bad consequences of a Trump loss!

  19. wsierichs says

I do NOT want a taco truck on every corner. I want a taco truck on every THIRD corner. In between, I want a burrito truck on every third corner and a tamale truck on every third corner. That way, I never have to walk more than 1.5 blocks max to get a taco, a burrito or a tamale. Now toss in hot-dog trucks, snowball trucks and ice cream trucks (with the familiar music from the loud speakers that makes little children salivate like Pavlov’s dogs) in the middle of every third block, so that you never have to walk more than 1.5 blocks to get a dog, snowball or ice cream cone, and it’s heaven. I mean real heaven. Not the one with the boring music that endlessly praises a sadistic mass murderer, but one where people can eat their favorite foods all day (each block will be nothing but restaurants with all kinds of food from around the world) without gaining an ounce of weight and remaining as fit as an Olympic athlete, and that really, truly is heaven. Even Satan will be there, with all his demons, but only because they really really love snowballs and ice cream cones.

  20. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

I want mini tacos. The normal sized taco is a usually a two hand operation. No problem for me, but the Redhead would have severe trouble with one.
Now a small, two bite taco, could be consumed easily with one hand…

  21. Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls says

Ah, the idjit who made the taco truck comment, also made another comment, showing that he is as clueless as The Donald.

Just before the founder of Latinos for Trump warned in a television interview there would be “taco trucks on every corner” if Mexican immigration to the U.S. goes unchecked, he told other Trump supporters “Hispanics are taking over” and called on the fellow supporters to “defend your country.”

Cue the Twilight Zone theme music.

  22. Akira MacKenzie says

    Nerd @ 6

I haven’t been down there in a while, but go down to Schitz Park, Tuesday’s from 11 am to 2 pm, from March to November. There are usually plenty of food trucks then.

Y’know, that’d be perfect for someone with small hands.

Downtown Milwaukee is an hour’s drive north as I live in Lake County, IL, south of Kenosha.

  25. Victor says

Nerd of Redhead, Dances OM Trolls, don’t worry about the size of the tacos. Proper taco truck tacos are made on two small nested corn tortillas, and each taco is just two or three bites.

Do a google search for “taco truck tacos” and look at the images. There are some pictures with 4 tacos spread out on a 9 or 10 inch paper plate.

  26. Lady Mondegreen says

Let’s not downplay the threat here. Who knows what’s next on Hillary’s agenda. Pupusas? Samosas? If Hillary wins, by this time next year we may all be awash in those little compressed cupcake-on-a-stick things with rainbow sprinkles. RAINBOW SPRINKLES. I wouldn’t put it past her.

  27. numerobis says

With a taco truck on every corner, you still have room for pad Thai trucks and papaya salad trucks, right?

@chigau: if trump is elected, there will be thousands of refugee taco trucks. I’m sure Justin could find it in his heart to let them in — after all, we need help feeding all those Syrian engineer and doctor refugees.

  28. Onamission5 says

    chigau (違う)

Indeed! Though some places are more fortunate than others; I hear tell there are entire swaths of the Midwest in the same sad state as Canada.

As I said elsewhere, I feel like if one wants to threaten USians with food, it should probably be a food most of us are actually afraid of like deep fried scorpions or blood sausage, not the second most beloved and ubiquitous food stuff next to pizza.

A correction: I realized this morning that there’s ten places to get tacos nearby, not seven.

  29. Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought says

Don’t diss blood sausage. Blood sausage with sauerkraut , mmmm.

There isn’t enough places with good mexican food over here. I’d welcome even a single taco truck.

  30. blf says

Don’t diss blood sausage. Blood sausage with sauerkraut , mmmm.

    Extra yummmmms added for emphasis.
Also applies to pizza (read: Italian), tacos (read: Mexican), Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, and numerous other immigrant foods (with the notable exception of British, which is banned in most parts of the world as a weapon of mass disgust).

  31. Onamission5 says

Beatrice, an amateur cynic looking for a happy thought

Heh. I didn’t say it was a rational fear, but it’s true you won’t find blood sausage on a lot of US restaurant menus, nor much in the way of organ meats, for that matter. I don’t know why so many of us are squeamish in that regard, but we are.

  32. Onamission5 says

    @Myself #46:

Ack. Shit. After further thought, given the many racist and classist assumptions involved in USian food aversions, it’s better that Gutierrez’s attempt to bank on that reflex failed so miserably, than if he’d referenced a food which would have gotten less comedic results. :/

  33. wzrd1 says

@brucej #21 and others suggesting various other ingredients, never tried those fusion recipes, but I’m *really* interested.
Now, to find some of those. We have plenty of Mexican derived dining establishments around here, some gotta offer fusion recipes.
If not, I’ll gin up my own.
Ya ought to try my kimchi omelette! The trick is to find a balance between various, competing flavors in that each has its own chance, rather than one overwhelm all. Getting the aroma right is a challenge, as I have a negligible sense of smell, but I can taste odors reasonably well.
As I’ve recently found an asian market here, just outside of Barksdale, I may well have a chance to gin up those very recipes. :)

  34. wzrd1 says

@Onamission5 #47, quite true. That annoying habituation goes back a long, long, long time.
Meat and potatoes (meat being beef, of course) diet was the *only* diet promulgated, due to political pressure, since cattle became a significant industry in this country onward until quite relatively recently. For many decades, the Mediterranean diet was called unhealthy in the extreme by the US government, why, olive oil was toxic at times! Fish, unspeakably evil (push back from the Roman Catholic church cured that quickly). Grains, bad, save white wheat and white rice.
Hell, corn was great, despite the need of nixtamalization, until pellegra became a major problem.
For the reader’s information displeasure, as the condition isn’t pleasant at all (massive trigger warning):
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellagra

Only recently have we advanced a bit, with a setback with Reagan’s catsup is a food nonsense, which at the time, pissed everyone off, to include his closest supporters (I remember that mess quite well).
Now, we know a lot more about nutrition and what foods do well (as in spinach is indeed high in iron, but it’s not easily bioavailable at all).
I’m one to carb load at breakfast, have a lighter lunch, carb load at dinner, but I burn carbs rapidly, due to ongoing thyroid issues. I’ll eventually have to rebalance things and likely, carb load at dinner, to process those carbs slowly at night. Eventually after, I’ll have to lower evening carb loads entirely, likely to near zero, as familial weight genetics is an issue and with that weight, insulin resistance comes into play.
Currently, I’m not watching cholesterol precursors, as my levels are at record lows, but that’s a known genetic factor in my family line and a previous issue. That’ll become an item of attention.
Which shows, a cookie cutter approach of one diet for all is a non-starter, we need to work with our physicians a *lot* more to learn precisely what works best for our metabolism.
But, for what tastes good, that varies more by culture. I enjoy spicy, my wife dislikes it out of fear of hot peppers, as she blisters upon contact with any significant (read, even untasteable by most) amount of capsaicin. I’ve gotten as high as a half teaspoon in two gallons of long cooked marinara sauce being tolerable by her. By the time someone tastes it, she has blisters.
With millions of dollars of study, we’d likely find a common genetic marker. But, the Tabasco company wouldn’t like such a study. :/

Scrapple comes to mind, quite popular in some parts of the country.
Alas, not in the part we’ve relocated to. :/

@Sili, there is only one good thing that I can say about Starbucks.
At least *they* stock Ethiopian coffee. I got hooked on it when I was traveling through Ethiopia, brought some home, but what I brought home was depleted in under two years. (Yeah, I brought back a lot of it.)

  37. subbie says

Sure, you all think taco trucks on every corner would be a good thing. But the next thing you know, the Mexicans will take over and force us all to live under Sangria law.

  38. wzrd1 says

    @subbie, noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lost one laptop over that!
Not even my very own lap!
    Or something. ;)

    Seriously, good one!

  39. blf says

Any chance they can drive away the Starbuckses?

    Starpuckses come in trucks?

(With help from Generalissimo Google™ there apparently are some Starpucks trucks.)

      ──────────────────────────

On Ethiopian coffee: I can usually find Ethiopian coffee in the specialist coffee, and — frequently fairtraded — in specialist (read: organic) food, shops.

The wild coffee plant was discovered in Ethiopia in something like the tenth century. However, as I recall, the origins of the plant are still largely unknown, albeit Ethiopia is a very obvious possibility (with, I think, the Kaffa region often mentioned (whether or not “coffee” is derived from “kaffa” is disputed / unclear)).
