We are teased with glittering flashy things and great balls of fire

Caine beat me to it. I’ve been watching all the eye-candy from Comic-Con — it is apparently the place to release all your super-hero trailers for the approval of adoring nerds — and has posted a bunch of trailers for upcoming movies. I’m seriously a bit burned out on the super-hero genre, although they sure do look purty and do a fine job of pandering to the short attention spans needed to watch a trailer, despite, I fear, often falling apart under the weight of holding up a whole movie.

The one she’s posted that I’d definitely like to see, though, is Wonder Woman. It’s set in WWI? That could be interesting.

Also, Caine missed one. I know what I’ll be doing the week of 30 September: Luke Cage on Netflix.

If it’s half as good as Jessica Jones, it’ll be excellent.

I did miss that one! So much stuff. You can’t tell much from a trailer, but I definitely liked what I saw of Wonder Woman. Diana’s comment about slavery to the secretary was fabulous. I like the setting, too. I am just hoping it’s actually good, all the way through. Been waiting for this for so long. It’s ridiculous how long the wait is when it comes to a female lead in anything, but especially a comics flick.

Now I want to see Thor: Goddess of Thunder, because so far, the comic has kicked ass, and Freyja is one of the best characters ever. I suppose that might make a movie before I die. Maybe.

Sweet Christmas, yes! I’ve been pretty impressed with this year’s tantalizing video tidbits of the geekery is open the horizon. The Wonder Woman trailer looked awesome (despite DCs many cinematic failures), American Gods tempts me, and I’m super-stoked for season 2 of The Expanse. (Donkey balls, yall!)

It’s almost enough to make life worth living.

Luke Cage seems to have two writers, a few producers, and of course Netflix in common with Jessica Jones. And of course the lead actor already showed us what he can do in that series. I have high hopes for its quality.

I finally had to look about Jessica Jones. It’s been quite some time without season 2, but I guess it’s just delayed, not cancelled.

Everything I hear about the upcoming American Gods just makes me squeee even more Gaimania.
‘Scully’ (Gillian Anderson) will be Media [squeee], and Gaiman is quite happy that the production is remaining quite faithful to the diversity of the novel’s characters.
    [going all comic con nerdy]
most recent tidbit I saw referred to Ash vs Evil Dead season 2. Which is so blood soaked with a happy gorefest, the fun is maintained and brings akaXena (Lucy Lawless as Ruby) further into the team, letting her kickass more thoroughly this season than initially.
Latest trailer for the next Star Trek TV series, finally revealed the full title and highlighted it by referencing the iconic movie with a vehicle with the same name. Star Trek: Discovery, the trailer mirroring the opening of 2001 who’s spaceship (the XD-1) was also named Discovery. (why there was an STS named Discovery). most likely the time period between ST:Enterprise and ST:TOS. While the NX-01 was the first ship to hit warp 5, the new ship, NCC-1031 could be (speculating) the first to achieve warp9, or whatever.

so much happens at SDCC that the only way to attend is virtually. Any event one physically attends means one will miss so many other events. Seems to me the only reason to physically attend is to cosplay. IMO squeee

I do enjoy (the better) comic book movies and series. I know they are silly and over the top, but I like them all the same, and the current crop is looking rather good. Netflix’s Marvel based properties have so far been excellent, with both seasons of Daredevil and the first season of Jessica Jones being phenomenally well handled, and I have every reason to expect that Luke Cage and Iron Fist will be similarly impressive.

As for the Wonder Woman trailer, it is looking very promising indeed. Much to the chagrin of all those who claimed that she couldn’t handle the role, Gal Gadot’s interpretation of the character (during her admittedly brief screen time) was one of the best parts of the otherwise often rather lackluster Batman Versus Superman, and an entire movie focusing on her character offers plenty of potential to flesh out her characterization and motivation (and have lots of rocking action scenes).

Even better, you just know that this movie will drive the MRAs into paroxysms of ranting dudebro rage – it seems only a matter of time before we see demands for boycotts and ridiculously florid comparisons to castration in celluloid form of the type surrounding the release of The Force Awakens – such a wealth of resentful MRA tears is reason enough in and of itself to cheer this movie on.

    Caine @ 1;

Diana’s comment about slavery to the secretary was fabulous.

That is a great line. I also like the sequence where the male lead falls back on a rather possessive, paternalistic form of words, and tells Diana he ‘can’t let her’ do something (one assumes this refers to exposing herself to some kind of danger, which is odd given the fact that she is so much better able to defend herself than he is), to which she replies that it is not up to him what she does – a perfectly reasonable sentiment that we still hear so rarely expressed in popular culture.

On the subject of new comic book movie trailers, here is a link to the latest Doctor Strange trailer. Much reality warping weirdness is to be had.

Now, if only we could persuade Marvel to introduce Deepak Chopra as a villain – a fantasy movie is the proper setting for his woo after all.

  8. Gregory Greenwood says

Yes, it’s the same one… which leaves me to wonder why Viacom bothered to block the other link.

  9. Gregory Greenwood says

Hmmm. It seems the post-eating Gremlins are at large again. Suffice to say, I am looking forward to the Wonder Woman movie as well. Gal Gadot’s take on the character in BvS was good, and it will be very interesting to see more.

Watching trailers like Luke Cage always makes me wonder why criminals never try shooting a superhero in the face. You know, maybe test the theory that their eyes might not be quite as invulnerable?

Well, sometimes they do try it, but it doesn’t end very well…

They do depict that sometimes with little effects, but since there is no metal to spark and no clothes that holes appear in, it isn’t as noticeable. When they do and want to make sure you notice, it’s usually a dramatic, cinematic slow-mo centerpiece like in the Superman with Brandon Routh where they showed the bullet hitting him right in his unblinking eye to no effect.

Though you’re right, it is pretty rare that it’s shown very clearly if at all, especially when there are multiple people firing hundreds of rounds in a chaotic environment – where they all couldn’t hit the hero exclusively the chest even if they wanted to. Heh.

You remind me of something else I always find funny. After a few years of Superman, or someone to that effect, how many criminals would still actually be trying to shoot him? I know not all criminals are bright, but still.

I’m cautiously optimistic about it. Zack Snyder is still listed as a story writer on the movie, and I’m just hoping he hasn’t fucked this one up, too. Perhaps the director, Patty Jenkins, and the other writers can prevent it from being terrible.

Fingers crossed. Early indications seem good, at least, and as I say I like Gal Gadot in the role, so we will just have to wait and hope for the best.

I am a bit fed up with superhero movies myself, violencing problems away. Ugh.
Violence can be fun but really, it’s almost the only thing we see that solves problems, it’s the main thing superheros do.

I found the “secretary = slave” making too blunt a point, but I think blunt times call for blunt action.
It is calculated to make mysogynists writhe and squirm, and I’m sure they won’t disappoint.

That Wonder Woman trailer did something no DC movie trailer has ever done before: it made me feel a spark of interest in seeing the movie.

Luke Cage is bulletproof and strong enough to kick down a steel-bar door, so why take some poor schmuck’s car door to knock down a door and serve as a shield? (I never heard of Cage before, because I’m not up on modern comics, although I collected them in the ’60s.)

  18. tkreacher says

    greg hilliard #21

Probably in a (futile) attempt to protect his clothes from being ruined. In a different spot where he is shot up he says, “I’m about sick of always having to buy new clothes.”

I’m also pretty certain that has to be the vehicle of one of the bad guys.

  19. tkreacher says

And, just to be clear, you just missed Cage if you stopped collecting in the 60’s. He’s not that modern, he first came out in like ’71 or ’72 I think.

  20. microraptor says

He spent the first couple of decades under the code name of “Power Man” and had an absolutely awful uniform that he’s still teased about by the other Avengers in the comics.

  21. microraptor says

Like Captain Sisko from DS9, Luke Cage originally had a short Afro and no beard but in the modern age shaved his head and grew a beard. Unlike Captain Sisko, Cage originally wore a hideous yellow shirt with a plunging v-neck and a shiny metal tiara.

  22. tkreacher says

    microraptor @24

The Avengers are blaming the wrong person with their mockery. The true culprits are the writer-gods of the universe who up until relatively recently couldn’t create a black character who didn’t dress like “Super Literal-Pimp” or not use Jive Talk.

Though it might bring some fourth wall problems if the were accurate in their hazing.

  23. microraptor says

Yeah, but Cage can at least respond by giving Hawkeye crap about his old uniform.

I binged watched the last 6 episodes of Daredevil season 2 today and after seeing the yet another fight with a multitude of bad guys knocked or killed I got to wondering. Between Daredevil, Electra, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, etc has anybody done a predator-prey analysis on superheros in a large metropolis? Are there enough bad guys to sustain them? Is that why superheros seem to turn on each other eventually?

I am contacting my daughter to get the password to my Netflix account so I can watch this. I have never used Netflix before, though I have been paying for it for over two years now. I let everyone else use it because I never watch tv or movies, preferring reading, and I’m a retiree who took up PC gaming instead of golf, as my hips have given out on me.

Then I broke down and watched Terminator: Genisys, and decided that while the acting in it was horrendous and the plot too inane for words, I enjoyed it and sci-fi genres generally, so this looks interesting.
