Here’s a treat: a congressman who has been in office since 1989, and is on the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

He’s a Republican, of course.
Meanwhile, in a small town in Alaska…
In this town of 403 residents 83 miles above the Arctic Circle, beaches are disappearing, ice is melting, temperatures are rising, and the barrier reef Kivalina calls home gets smaller and smaller with every storm.
There is no space left to build homes for the living. The dead are now flown to the mainland so the ocean won’t encroach upon their graves. Most here agree that the town should be relocated; where, when and who will pay for it are the big questions. The Army Corps of Engineers figures Kivalina will be underwater in the next decade or so.
It really ought to be possible to impeach politicians for egregious wrongness. Or maybe the voters in California’s 48th district ought to stop electing this asshole.

There once was a time where Republicans would laugh John Birch Society talking points out of the room. Now the Birchers control their platform at every government level. I guess they got the last laugh.
A gummy, rotting, cavity-filled laugh.

Zeno says
California has successfully reduced the GOP’s power in state government (not one statewide elected position is occupied by a Republican) , but nutty red enclaves continue to choose wackos that faithfully reflect their delusions. Rohrabacher can count on plenty of paranoid Bircher-types to vote regularly for him.

I wonder who this powerful global government is. I mean I know here in the US we’re ruled by the Homo-fascists, but I don’t think they’ve conquered the world yet.

Unfortunately, I live in this asshole’s district. I went on a rant in the Political Madness thread about the kind of flotsam that live here and vote for cretins like this. The yacht club Newport Beach crowd that have no empathy for someone below their money level (because the poor didn’t pull their socks up hard enough. Hard to do when you don’t own fucking socks); the gleeful new crowd of gun fondlers that had a judge allow them to now carry concealed weapons, The Fashion Island (aka Fascist Island) crowd who only live to serve the concept of shopping for handbags that start at $4000 and if they have even heard of issues of racism and poverty have certainly never given them a second thought. This is the crowd that keeps re-electing this scumbag, and handily. The area is gerrymandered nicely too so that fewer Hispanics get a say in things.

Recently attended a lecture by an ex US Secretary of State for Defense who gave a scathing assessment of Congress. Described them as, for the most part, a bunch corrupt, self-seeking, self-regarding ignoramuses, who would either block or back any program, regardless of merit, depending on which course of action would keep them in office. Quote: “They spend much time lost in thought due to being unfamiliar with the territory”.
Was this fair?
marcus says
@12 Absolutely not!
It implies that they are somewhere within the territory of rational thought when, in reality, they are not even on the same fucking planet,

Its worse than scientific illiteracy and arrogance, that buffoon doesn’t even understand high school mathematics. If you adjust numbers in a set, some get bigger and some get smaller, then you know what? The mean can stay right where it is! More water in some places, less in others, same global average? No shit Sherlock.

That must mean real estate prices are going up, right? I’m sure the republicans can find a silver lining on that thundercloud!

This claim is made because antidepressants like Celexa have a flourine (F) atom in its molecule (C20H22BrFN2O) and Nazi’s supposedly added fluoride it to the water in concentration camps.
I’ve seen this issue of flouridation and mind control also with the no chemicals in our food and water, all natural left. People in the artsy, hippy town of Arcata, CA tried to stop fluoridating their water several years ago because of this concern.
The actual chemistry doesn’t matter.

Well, if all the people in the 48th district who voted for the Dem. candidate in 2012 had also voted in the 2014 election, they would’ve won.

Is this really a good example of global warming? I have no doubts that global warming is real and is a threat. But opponents can merely argue that this is a barrier island. Barrier islands move around over time, especially small ones. It may be faster than is typical, but just saying this may be easy pickings for the idjits.

I was thinking the same thing. Even the article suggest that Global Climate Change is not the only reason.

Here is the GCC tie in from the article, less ice means more erosion.

I don’t know that I’d call Kivalina a ‘barrier’ island. It’s actually at the end of a long spit and has an airport landing strip just north of town. There are a lot of other islands further from the mainland in the area. It’s demise will come solely from rising waters, not storm erosion.
