I think it’s incredibly sweet that last week Neil deGrasse Tyson premiered COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey for my birthday, and the second episode is on tonight…just in time for my 34th wedding anniversary. It’s amazing how the entire universe revolves around me.

Fortunately my DVR gives me the option of record whole series on initial set-up. All is ready.
Just remember you are base and vile, as Calvin put it “utterly depraved.” But at the same time you are the crown of creation. But it is amazing that this god who made this base and vile crown of creation loves us. Everytime I make something utterly base and vile I totally love it and am amazed at my ability to make something so utterly worthless and yet utterly love it unconditionally simultaneously. I am such a supreme genius, as Wiley Coyote would say. I am also perfect because I choose to arbitrarily redeem some utterly worthless things I made which are paradoxically the greatest things in all creation and damn other things for eternity. Anyway that’s your daily lesson in Christian logic 101.

I won’t get to see Cosmos tonight, but soon. I thought the first episode was a little wobbly, but I’m looking forward to seeing where they go with it.

My 25th anniversary was on the11th too. There must be something special about March 11, 1/365 of the world’s population can’t be wrong. Happy anniversary to everyone with something to celebrate!

BTW the observable universe rotates around every observer, by definition. My thumb held at arms length can blot out whole clusters of galaxies from view. I Am God in my personal version of the univerve!

Here on the other side of the pond, I just saw the first episode of Cosmos on Nat Geo and indeed it was one of the better documentaries shown on that channel for a long time.
And as an added bonus, tonight’s episode was shown without any commecrial interruption … woo-hoo!

Just saw the second Cosmos. Very good! It opened with the domestication of dogs, and my two dogs were right there on the couch with me.
I hope the anniversary was wonderful.

It was all evolution and, for the most part, all splendid. I could live without the ‘ship of the imagination’ and the less than state-of-the-art cartoon animation but those are negligible objections. To this non-scientist the fact that detailed, unapologetic evolutionary biology was presented to a mass audience was heartwarming and occasionally breathtaking. If you have the appropriate technology it’s MUCH better without the 18 minutes of commercials.
I wonder how long it will be before some ID outfit tries to steal that footage with the “machine”-like DNA polymerases and kinesins….
On the tree of life, they showed an entire limb covered by sea slugs. Was that the nudie branch?
Yeah, the DNA animation irritated me to the point that I said something to my wife, and before I could explain what I meant, they switched to another animation that showed it right. Then, in the process of checking my perception on the internet, I learned something new.
Animators! DNA is not a big thin, pretty pair of helixes with little skinny connecting rungs made like vines or some ethereal force. The structure is blobby and knobby with atoms like beach balls and the helixes aren’t neatly opposite each other. The helixes are only the supports, the information is in the rungs.
Yes, COSMOS (ep.2) was wonderful. Especially by poking ID in the eye [pun intended] with a pointy stick. I was so pleased to see Neil attack that nonsense head-on; with perfectly clear, unambiguous, language.

I think it was an amusing “coincidence”, that prior to COSMOS: the episode of Family Guy had Peter, and his pals, looking for God; found him, berated him, etc. Seth is producer of both COSMOS, and Family Guy; and double irony, both are on FOX!!! [Murdoch must loathe Seth]

Someone above, mentioned it (COSMOS) moving to Monday. I think that is when NatGeo broadcasts it. FOX is Sunday, NatGeo is Monday, and some other FOX networks other days.
I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but when Neil’s ship of the imagination started travelling through the bear’s blood vessels, I immediately thought of the theme song for the Magic School Bus.
