This photography stuff is amazing

This is a small piece of a larger — much larger — photo of a Vancouver street crowd. Go to the original image, though, which allows you zoom in and in and in — you’ll be able to see the faces in surprising detail of each of the little dots.

The Vancouver Canucks Fan Zone along Georgia St. for Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final was captured at 5:46 pm on June 15, 2011. It is made up of 216 photos (12 across by 18 down) stitched together, taken over a 15-minute span, and is not supposed to represent a single moment in time. The final hi-res file is 69,394 X 30,420 pixels or 2,110 megapixels.

I’ve stared at it for hours, though, and still haven’t managed to find Waldo.

    Okay lower right hand side of the pic, just outside the fence, a couple of people appear to be getting sucked into a vortex.

    I’m guessing you were joking, but Waldo IS in there, I just happened across him.

    Zoom into the center of the image. Under the curve of the street lamp. There he is with his back to us.

    I’m not sure if you are joking, but Waldo IS in there, I just spotted him.

    Look at the street lamp next to the tree just to the left of center of the image. He is underneath the curve of the lamp with his back to us.

    Yeah, those artifacts are pretty common in photos like these. That image is 216 shots that were taken over a fifteen minute period. You can find all sorts of amusing continuity breaks along the borders where different images were stitched together.

    Amazing how much you can zoom in and still get a detailed resolution.
    Mcbails, LOL, I noticed that also. There at least 6 or 7, some of just lower legs, upper bodies, some melting into the fence, coming outta the ground, yet they are right beside complete, focused, unblurred whole people.
    Question: do the people in the photo know they are on the web? I’m pretty sure several of those people might have phoned in sick to work, etc., LOL!

    So far I’ve found a Green Man (with his head covering down) and some dude wearing an XKCD shirt. I’m not sure why I can’t stop looking at this photo.

    I couldn’t find Waldo near the tree under the curve of the light. Therefore, due to a lack of hard evidence, I’ve concluded Waldo was in one of the PitStop potties.
    It’s up to you to prove me wrong.

    Start at the billboard (or scoreboard, or whatever it is at the bottom) at about the halfway zoomed in level (so you can see individual people). From its left edge, track exactly straight upward (using the arrow keys helps keep it from drifting). Right before you get to the branches in front of the curve of the light, about 3 rows of people short … red and white striped hat and shirt.

    Huh, now that I play around with this a bit more, there are quite a few more people than I would have expected staring directly into the camera with a slightly perturbed expression.

    That photo links to the 2011 FA Cup final one – the World record holder at 1,000 photos, 23 gigapixels, and 23,000 people tagged. There’s a whole world of OCD out there I’ve been missing…

    They’ve actually changed that page… Used to be able to zoom anywhere.

    Fun finding climbers on Half Dome and other spots.

    Zoom in over the “Ham” in the street sign next to the visible green light. There’s what appears to be a teenage girl rolling her eyes SO HARD.

    I hope she doesn’t bust her rollin’ muscles.

    Also, another girl is looking at her like “Why are you even rolling your eyes like that? What is even wrong with you? God.”

    What a cool picture. On another note – On the top of this page is an ad for Vinyard Church in Ann Arbor, Mi. with a picture of a Darwin fish kissing a jesus fish. I find this the very essence of irony and hilarity!

    What a cool picture! On an ironic note – At the top of my webpage for this blog is an advertisement for Vinyard church in Ann Arbor Michigan. It has a picture of a Darwin fish appearing to kiss a jesus fish (big heart where their “lips” would meet). too funny.

    Hey PZ!

    So, I am not sure how many people this is affecting. However, the entire FtB page is stuck on the August 9th updates. Is there something I should know about? I am using Google Chrome (latest version).

    I know as a fact that you had updates because they appeared yesterday, briefly. When I link here through SB, I always get the same old entries.

    It would be so very generous of you to fix this because the world revolves around me. And I am itchin’ for my Pharyngular high. Please, PZ, I beg of you.
