Your Moment of Zenlike

Over on a post of PZ’s, zenlike has a particularly insightful comment. The OP is criticizing some bullshit commentary on Fox News about how trans folk are destroying the entire species of Homo sapiens:

We’re not talking about people who want to simply do a bit of reform here and there, add a new category. They want, they must, in fact, destroy whatever is in order to replace it with what they think should be.

[T]he trans people have taken it one step further because by abandoning gender altogether, not simply re-writing it, they’re basically trying to use social engineering to create a new species.

[presented out of order, because I think it’s easier to follow the logic that way – cd]

Instead of doing the obvious thing & pointing out that the gay men already moved us beyond H. sapiens with the music of Pete Shelley …

…zenlike picks up on another aspect of this Fox News “logic”.

If trans* folks are the leading edge of a movement to a new species, that certainly implies that the trans* folks that currently exist are (or are nearly) non-human already. From zenlike:

At the risk of speaking as a cis person of what trans people really want, my understanding is that the opposite is true: trans people want to be considered full human beings. It is bigots like the “expert” here who regularly deny them their full humanity.

I thought this was a particularly insightful catch, revealing how the openly dehumanizing rhetoric of cissexism becomes embedded in ways that allow dehumanizing assumptions to persist and continue to dictate the terms of society’s treatment of trans people while remaining sufficiently hidden in the premises of an argument to make the argument appear on its face to be unopposed to the humanity of trans people (even if the argument is stupid or objectionable for other reasons).

I frequently make an effort to call out such coded dehumanization because I think that when it becomes hidden in the premise of an argument it becomes harder to root out and wanted to give PZ credit for highlighting this bullshit and zenlike credit for openly recognizing the dehumanization present in it.

But aren’t these the same people that claim that new species can’t arise so quickly, because *handwave*, therefore, creationism must be true.

If new species can arise so quickly, then evolution must be true. Checkmate, Christians!

(If they get to twist logic, well, so do I)
