This is something I’m also incredibly fascinated by. The video I’m sharing with you is Robert Fripp using his guitar to create this amazing sounscape. Yes, all those sounds you hear (the orchestral strings, synth, all of it) are being made by his guitar…
This makes me want to tell you about two Roland products I desperately want. I promise this isn’t a paid advertisement (I wish… I could get them for free!). Just some short musings about these products and why I want them…
I mentioned in the GGS series post on Third Stone from the Sun that I’m a big fan of psychedelic and experimental rock… but also psychedelic/experimental music in general. This means I live for guitar sound effects. So when I first heard, a few years ago, about a guitar pedal that makes your guitar sound like pretty much any instrument, I knew I had to have it.
It’s made by Roland, and it’s called the GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer. From every video I’ve watched and everything I’ve listened to that features this amazing pedal, it’s a seriously amazing product. Imagine being able to play saxophone solos or piano solos on the guitar. Or… really… imagine being able to do what Robert Fripp does above.
The other one, which I only discovered much more recently, is the GR-S V-Guitar Space, which is built to help you create atmosphere and space on the guitar. It’s a really cool idea that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with.
I’m still working out making enough money and building a budget to be able to purchase these and other Roland guitar pedal and synth products that will allow me to expand my guitar playing in new ways. I’m definitely excited about these products, and about Roland in general, whose guitar innovations seem to know no bounds.

Are you ever going to post any of your guitar playing?

I’m hoping to be able to record some songs I’ve written eventually. In the meantime, I don’t have much to share. I may try and share my covers of Pink Floyd’s Money and Syd Barrett’s Dark Globe at some point…
