What is this “walking” you speak of?

I’m going to Niagara Falls this afternoon. I was here for nearly 3 weeks in 2007, and I never managed to get to the Falls, though I did get to the Finger Lakes (all the way to Skaneateles) and Niagara-on-the-Lake, which were cool. The omission has always bugged me, so I’M GOING.

So there.

Meanwhile I think I’ll have time for a walk this morning. Ima go over to the entrance to the university, if I can make it without being run over – there are literally no sidewalks here. None. You have to walk in the street. Hey, you’re not supposed to be walking in the first place, so don’t look at us! It’s extra fun because people go about 50 miles an hour on these suburban streets with no sidewalks.

The Canadian Falls are more impressive than the American Falls. Do you have your passport?

I don’t think a US citizen needs a passport to enter Canada. Any government issued ID should suffice. But yes, you definitely need to get to the Canadian side. Back in 1981 or so, when I visited, there was a ten cent toll for pedestrians crossing the bridge. Bring some change.

i think the rule per #2 above was only true until just after 9/11/2001. Now one should bring the real thing.

Yes, I belatedly remembered to look into that and it’s a good thing because my passport expired a few months ago and it was probably too late to renew plus it’s EXPENSIVE – so I got an enhanced driver’s license.

You do have to have either a passport or enhanced driver’s license to enter Canada. Only kids 16 and under can get in with a birth certificate (unless you’re 17-19 and traveling with an official school or church group. Yeah, I know).

I didn’t realize how awesome the falls would be until I was there, and OMG AMAZEBALLS. We did not go to the Canadian side (no passports at the time), but did both the boat ride and the stairs next to the falls. I thought it was ridiculous to pay to walk up and down some stairs, but it ended up being my favorite part of it. It’s right there, and you’re walking through rainbows and stuff. It’s great.

Saw them @ age 7. Took the Maid of the Mist and went behind them even. Walked over to the US side to see the place where Commander Tom and Dave Thomas of Rocketship 7 lived, but Da couldn’t join us. He was a wee too dark. I learned of Tesla, Sir Adam Beck and racism that day during the summer of love.

    Enjoy them they are beautiful.
