Anderson Cooper had a piece at CNN about the Schatzes and about Daniel Michael Pearl’s horrible child-rearing advice:

Good on the DA for not hesitating to implicate the Pearls directly. He’s probably caught a lot of shit for that, but it needed to be said.
I actually thought it was a shame when I watched this video because I think the Pearls actually hit on exactly what makes for effective discipline and they mistakenly think it is the use of pain as punishment. He tells the story of making a parent stop the car each and EVERY time when a child was misbehaving to give a ‘spanking’ (assault). He underlines the importance of follow through when the Dad only threatens a further assault and the child stops the misbehaviour.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pearl’s children actually didn’t end up assaulted that often because they understood that their parents would always follow through. It is just such a shame he thinks it is the violence and not the parenting consistency that produces results. It also means that people who read his books are much more likely to think more violence and not more consistency is the key if the ‘system’ isn’t working.
The bad advice is from *Michael Pearl*, not Daniel Pearl.
Daniel Pearl was the guy beheaded by Al Qaeda eight or nine years ago.
The Pearls are quite amazingly still part of the “Christian Tuff Luv” genre of “straightening people out”.
The Pearls insist on beating toddlers… I must point out that they themselves have stated that they “may get arrested by the man” a few years ago for advocating “hitting children below the age of 3”.
As far as I am concerned, any man who would treat his children worse than he treats his dog is really fucked up. (Yeah, they won’t hit their dog but spanking their kids was normal. Apparently dog’s can be reasoned with but children speak gobbledeegook or something)
